Yes, you definitely want to stay in the historic city. It’s the whole point of going to Charleston.
Make your dinner reservations now.
There are many hotels to choose from, all are expensive because the city is so popular. Wentworth Inn is too far away. Stayed at the Restoration last week - it was excellent. At the high end Hotel Bennet, the Bohemian and -especially— the Spectator are all top notch.
More moderate options are the Francis Marion and the Mills House.
All are centrally located. You can walk or take a rickshaw to dinner. You won’t need a car except to go to the beach, plantations or Patriot’s Point which are about a 20 minute drive.

quote:We have stayed there too. It is a very nice hotel on the campus of the College of Charleston. It is a several block walk from the center of town and the top notch restaurants but it is a pleasant walk when the weather is good. We asked the lady at the front desk whether it was safe to walk late at night. She looked at us like we were crazy and said "Of course it is". Good option, but not in the same class as the Vendue.

I’m not crazy about the Vendue after the remodel. The remodel is pretty generic. Vendue has the rooftop bar, but otherwise has been surpassed by the Bohemian and the Spectator.
Hotels and restaurants in Charleston are in an arms race akin to SEC athletic facilities. Vendue is a generation behind.
