I'll be on a cruise that stops in Belize City next month. Most of the ship's excursions are 5+ hours long and I don't wait to commit to anything for that long. Besides just staying at the little area right off the ship, what else is there to do in Belize City? I was thinking of taking a water taxi to Caye Caulker...anyone been there? Ok place to spend a few hours walking around? Are there any shops for the GF's to kill some time in? What about good restaurants?

How are the water taxi's? Don't want to get stranded on the island and miss the ship. Any other suggestions?

Get off the ship early and take the water taxi to Caye Caulker. Dont stay in that port area. Waste of time. Walk the Caye to the split to the Lazy Lizzard stopping at the bars along the way, and go swimming and drinking Belikin beers. They usually have people with pits selling grilled lobster (in season) right along the path next to the beach. When you come back to the port go to the Coconut Bar (little thatched hut) guy selling coconuts with rum. Really good drink!

Belize City is a shithole and that may be an insult to shitholes. Do an excursion away from that town.

I have been there on a cruise. The city itself is not a pleasant place to visit. We toured the Mayan ruins of Alton Ha which was pretty interesting. It is about a 30 minute ride from town. The port area is just a tourist trap shopping mall. If you want a nice bar go to the French Quarter style courtyard bar at the Great House Hotel a few blocks from the ship. Be careful. It seemed pretty safe to us but on another occasion a friend of mine was mugged around there.
