My wife and her friend had their car robbed in Marseilles while they were at the beach. Lost everything they didn't have with them which fortunately included passports.

An Albanian kid stole my wristwatch on a beach in Corfu. It was on the sand next to me, he grabbed and ran. Fortunately it was fairly cheap.

There is a Costa Rican scam that I'm not sure exists still but it might. At Manuel Antonio while driving in people wearing official looking vests will try to flag you into their parking area. Very aggressive. If you fall for it they charge you something like $20 to park in a crappy location. There is free parking much closer the park. We'd heard about the scam.

I watched a pick pocket work for about 15 mins one night in New Orleans. It was like 4:00 and I was leaning against a pole. She was working a half block away, hugging up on male passers by and dropping the wallets with a guy on the corner across from me. This was 20 years ago. Probably should have found a cop or something but was in no condition to talk to the police.

I was totally convinced me and my ex gf were about to either get robbed or kidnapped by a cab driver in Peru.

It was late at night and we were trying to get to this random B&B. We took a very shady looking cab, with a driver that spoke zero English (pretty common there).

After driving for about half an hour it was obvious this guy didn't know where he was going. We were driving through these very narrow alleys getting further and further on the outskirts of town. At one point he just stopped in this narrow alley and got out. Left us in there in the pitch black for about 10 min.

I was like this is it, we're about to get robbed. Turns out he was legitimately asking someone for directions and we eventually made it.

A coworker asked me to buy her leather, silk lined gloves in Italy. While in Venice, I came across a leather market and bought a pair. Good thing I checked in bag because the old lady switched out a cheap pair of gloves. When I called her out on it, she gave me the ones I bought.

Had a questionable guy shout at me when I saw him eye my camera when walking near the Eiffel Tower. My wife thought he was going to chase me down, but I ignored him and he left us alone.

I’ve had good luck with cabs by asking price upfront. In Eastern Europe, rides where no more than ten bucks.

First ran across this at about 17, and I'll admit, he got me. But when he asked for the money after I shoo'd him away, I told him in about 3 minutes, you'll really be able to tell me where I got my shoes cuz they're going to be up your arse.

Ever since then that's been my go to statement for those folks.
