Thinking about planning a trip for Jan/Feb of 2019. My son will be almost 6.

Mine started skiing at 4. Oldest, now 8, wants to learn to snowboard but I'm keeping him on skis until the youngest goes through another year or two of ski school. Ski school is expensive and I can't swing having two in at the same time.

I've seen kids around 6 riding a snowboard but that is a rarity. Check the ski schools you are looking at as well as a lot don't have group lessons for snowboards that young so you would have to pay up for a private lesson.

6 is fine to start if that's what he wants to do. Learning to ski is easier for a kid than learning to snowboard as there isn't a snowboard version of snowplow beyond just skidding straight down the mountain on one edge. Getting on and off lifts also sucks a bit more on a snowboard for a little kid.

That being said, plenty of kids learn to snowboard younger than 6.

That's a pretty outdated view. Main thing I like about skiing over snowboarding these days is that telemark or ATs are much better if you're going backcountry and doing some mountaineering which is what I found myself doing more and more of when I lived in Colorado. Sucks having to lug snowshoes when going backcountry on a board, and split boards are meh.

If you're a recreational winter sports person who spends most of your time at a resort, then there's really nothing that makes skiing vs. boarding better other than personal preference. I will say that if you're going to be going repeatedly to a resort with a lot of moguls (Winter Park/Mary Jane), then skis are probably more prevalent and desirous. If you're doing a lot of powder and trees, I think snowboards are way more fun... though fat skis have improved the off piste experience for skiiers.

My knees can't take skiing anymore and I never really felt comfortable on skis. I switched to snowboarding and will never look back. I'll try my son out on both but I think he'd enjoy snowboarding more once he learns the basics.
