Any suggestions on what do? I’m going for work, but I’ll have at least a week off to explore.

Assuming you are in Lima I'd catch a flight elsewhere. A lot of people would go to Cusco and Machu Pichu. Personally, I'd go to Iquitos and stay at a couple of different Amazon River eco-lodges. Muyana and Explornapo are a couple of really good ones. Not cheap but they provide the river transportation and meals and have interesting activities.

I’ve never been, I assume Lima is a pretty rough city? Doesn’t look pretty from the photos.

And thank you, that’s exactly what I was hoping for.

If you explore Lima and want to see nice Lima you have to head to Miraflores.

The drastic change you'll encounter on your drive from the airport to there is interesting. Like going from slum to Europe/Beverly Hills in 45 minutes. Wouldn't even know it's the same city.

By air you can be anywhere in Peru in an hour.

Lima...my two cents

1-2 days to tour around Lima...if you are not into Churches (or Catholic) you can skip it down to 1 day. Lima is like anywhere else in that part of the world, some very nice areas and some not. But I like Miraflores the best. Lots of great restaurants there.

Peru is still my favorite place I have been in the world.

If you are looking to relax, Mancora is an old beach town that is cheap and laid back. Spent a week there after hiking Macchu Picchu and others.

But I recommend Macchu Picchu, Olatayambo, Cusco, etc for your time. If you are younger it is an easier choice. You want to hike Wayna Picchu, and all other areas. It was sad seeing all of the older folks who could not enjoy the Incan greatness. You will not have time to do the trail, but no shame in taking the train from Cusco to Macchu Picchu.

If you want more specifics, I will gladly give my two cents.

Yes, Lima is rough and the traffic is horrible; the worst I've ever seen. But the Miraflores area of Lima is fairly nice with lots of security, and I enjoyed walking from Miraflores down to and along the ocean front. Lima has really odd weather because of the cold ocean current. It's coastal desert but cold in our summer with a lot of fog and dust in the air.

Went there for 3 days on a whim. My cliffnotes:

Eat a fried guinea Pig
Drink a pisco sour
Walk to the pacific and dip a toe
Traffic is so crazy, it’s worth taking a tour to experience. It’s that ridiculous
They have a cool water park exhibition that’s worth the trouble getting there
Tour Sun Valley instead of Machu Picchu if you strapped for time. MP if you have time
All bartenders can hook you up with whatever you need/want for cheap
Buy something made of alpaca for your lady friend - I recommend a scarf
