Headed to the east end in a couple of weeks. Will be travelling with young kids and wife. Has anyone been to that area since the hurricanes? If so, any recs on St. John or east St. Thomas for beach bars/restaurants or other stuff to do?

We went zip-lining then shopped around the high end retail stores. Beautiful place, especially the views from higher elevations.

VaBuckeye will be around and he has a lot of info on the island. We just booked flights this morning for next year, going to stay on St John.

From our past trip id recommend taking the ferry to St John and hitting the beaches there. Some good restaurants and bars right in Cruz Bay where the ferry drops you off at. They have a bus that will take you from Cruz Bay all along the north side to the beaches, beautiful beaches with great snorkeling.

I'm also a big fan of renting a boat for a day and island hopping through the USVI and BVI. Can snorkel , bar hop, whatever. Very nice to see everything from the water.

Have fun, they are great island and you will enjoy it while helping the tourism economy get back on both feet.

We went 4yrs ago but had some great times at Duffy's Love Shack in Red Hook. Great drinks and the place gets pretty lively with music and dancing at night. We took the ferry over to St John, rented a Jeep, and drove all over the island for the day stopping off at different beaches and restaurants/bars. Just an absolute blast and easily the highlight of the trip. So much so that we decided that we would stay on St John for our next trip. That place is like heaven on earth.

Yeah St John is definitely the place to stay / spend most of your time on. We stayed on St Thomas first visit and ferried to St John most days. Ferry is very easy and convenient from Red Hook, so no big deal if you already booked St Thomas. But, if you are booking, book St John. That is where I booked for next year's trip.

As atxfan said St. John is another world altogether.

I know much more about St. John and the BVI than I do St. Thomas. On St. Thomas I'd be sure to go to mountaintop. The views from there are incredible and the banana daquiris don't suck either.

If you want to day trip from St. Thomas I'd talk to Hank at ftmcharters.com. I met him last month on Jost van Dyke and he was a good guy and knows his way around the waters.

If you day trip to St. John just take the ferry out of Red Hook. There are still some great restaurants there (RIP Zozo's) and bars (RIP Beach Bar and Joe's RUm Hut for now). The upper bar at Ocean 362 is a great place for dinner and Extra Virgin is just a great restaurant period.

You can rent a jeep on St. John and if you do Trunk Bay has been free to visit since Irma and is one beautiful beach. You can drive over by Coral Bay and have lunch at Skinny Legs. If you have kids you can hit the Taproom at Mongoose Junction and have a local beer while the kids hav rootbeer floats with homemade ice cream and site made root beer or eat at Morgan's Mango.

If you decide to charter with Hank I'd bring passports and hit the BVI. From St. Thomas you can hit Jost van Dyke for sure and Little Jost van Dyke to hit the B Line Bar for drinks. B Line is about as beach dive bar as it gets. Jost van Dyke is home to some of the most famous beach bars in the Caribbean and perhaps the most well known of all in the Soggy Dollar Bar. You can get lobster quesadilla at One Love for lunch. Be forewarned, they are huge and one can easily feed 2-3 people.

The other islands in the BVI are a stretch on a day trip from St. Thomas. If you were staying on St. John I'd suggest that you charter with Rockhoppin and head out for the day with Steve or Marty. They're both friends and I'd choose Marty if I had the choice but Steve is a great captain as well. From St. John you can hit Jost, Norman Island, Virgin Gorda or the Willie T on Peter Island. Again, if you have kids be forewarned, the Willie T can get extremely raunchy and the later in the afternoon you get there the more likely your kids are going to see things you'd prefer they not see. I've heard about Prop Stop and the Willie T is Prop Stop on steroids.

Enjoy the trip!! Those islands are among my favorite places in the world.
