Is this delay new, or have I been living under a rock?

I don't really ever cancel flights.

Seems like something from 1980 for a card refund to take 14 business days.

Probably won't take that long at all.

They'd rather give themselves leeway, as opposed to obligating themselves to 48 hours and something going wrong (or just taking time to settle with your bank) and having to deal with people complaining about it.

This. I got a credit for *delayed* luggage for $700 ish in expenses within 48 hours (needed a suit for a meeting, bag showed up the day before I picked my suit up in Brussels.) EU, but still. (ETA: United was the airline, but I flew from IAH to BRU, and I've never seen any customer service rep bend over so fast.)
