We stayed here...
Gracebay Townhomes
Two block walk to the beach. Loved it. Full kitchen. Reasonably priced.
It's not "All Inclusive". Why? That's one expensive island, so we were trying to save some money. Not sure there are many there anyway.
Our friends stayed at Beaches.
They liked it, but it's very expensive.
Depends on what you're looking for and why you're going there. Personally? Liked the island, but there's not much to do except stay on the beach and water sports, which might be what you're looking for. There is some snorkeling near shore, and we took a 1/2 day excursion with Island Vibes to the reefs off shore, which we loved.
It's a flat, arid looking island. Water and beaches are gorgeous. Among the prettiest in the Caribbean probably.
That's why people go there if it's there thing.
For us, as a family, we wouldn't go back for what it's worth. So many other options in the Caribbean. Grenada was our personal favorite FYI.
Others may have different opinions. I will say for an island type vacation it's very convenient in terms of flights and the duration's not very long comparatively, which is a big plus.

We haven’t stayed there, but I’ve heard/read that the Beaches resort is top notch.

Don't do Beaches. Mega resort that ruins its section of the beach with rows and rows of chairs.
Provo is a great place with fantastic restaurants near Grace Bay. Don't limit yourself to AI there.

There is no crime in Turks and Caicos, you don't need to be locked in a compound.

Well, every country has crime and Turks and Caicos is no exception. It is among the safer Caribbean Islands (and I get what you're saying having been to Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic for a few).

I think TCI is one of the safest destinations. It is not a crime infested Island for the average visitor, but there has been an "uptick" in crime and gun violence this year. You can Google if you'd like. Most crimes happen outside the Grace Bay Area, but they have and do occur there too. I wouldn't want the OP to think you could just walk around the island willy nilly after 9pm at night.
One of the great restaurants on the island is Bugaloo's in what they call the "Five Cays Settlement Area". The area around the restaurant is a little sketchy, so not sure most tourists would feel comfortable driving down there after dark for example. We went for lunch after snorkeling on the amazing Taylor Bay Beach. It's on the West End of the island and probably 30-40m from Grace Bay. Or around the Blue Hills area at night (approximate area where the popular "Da Conch Shack" is).
I mean, we all go to popular US cities like New Orleans all the time, right? Crime there is astronomically higher than TCI, but we don't think twice about it. We just are more wary. Just like where probably any of us live, there are places you would NEVER walk late at night. Or flash lots of jewelry or cash. Or walk alone down a secluded road or beach with no lights late at night.
Use common sense and all should be fine.
