Did you stay mainland or go to the islands? Disappointing to hear we followed a lot of your T&C recs and had a great time. Planning on going to Ambergris Caye in late Jul but may look into other options.

We stayed on Ambergris Caye. It was fine but the rain and lack of good beaches did put a damper on things. We also felt that the towns overall feel changed after dark. It may have been safe but it felt a little unsafe. Also, if you stay there during the rainy season there can be a stench in areas that the water stays in and stagnates.
We day tripped to the mainland and went all the way across the country to Xunantunich. Driving across the country you get a feeling for just how poor the country is. The answer is it's a really poor country. We had a driver and felt safe the entire day. I can tell you that Belize City is a shithole and it did not feel safe there. The infrastructure in Belize City is crumbling. Hope this helped.

I know you said the British island but have you been to Punta Cana? It compares decently?

I haven't been to Punta Cana but from what I've seen on this board it is held in high regard.
