A trip to India has been on my to-do list for quite sometime now. Has anyone been? Can you recommend various cities to visit and the best route? Any must see and must skip sights? Any hidden gems you'd recommend?

It's an absolutely enormous place, geographically, culturally, population-wise. Narrow your focus to a single region (or two), unless you have a couple of months to burn.

I'm partial to Kerala, in the south, in part b/c I have friends there. See what Lonely Planet says about it: LINK
Tropical, beautiful, etc.

Ya, I did some of northern India in 2013. Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, and Pushkar.

Loved it. As mentioned it's a huge country with lots to see and do.

Depends on your interests. For example, you may want to head to Varanasi to see the cremations and aarti, while other people would find that to be perhaps gross. India is like visiting the US in it's geographic/cultural diversity.

Just make sure you do like George Costanza and never take off your Timberlands.

I’ve been everywhere in India
Filthy country outside
Cleanest restaurants inside
Eat vegetarian. It’s fantastic
Get a driver. You don’t want to attempt the traffic
Tip well and they’ll do anything for you.

Check out "Bald and Bankrupt" "Harold Baldr" and "Karl Rock" on Youtube. Great content about the different areas around India. Drink a Kingfisher for me.

Spent 10 days in Mumbai and this is very true, you get used to it after a few days though.

a good friend of mine is Tamil and wants to take me to southern India in the next year or two.

Panaji is nice and really the whole state of Goa is pretty solid.

Chennai is on my list for sure
