to deal with some family business.

We are avoiding New Orleans entirely, but would like for my youngest to have a some fun and see some unique parts of the culture (she is 12 so you may be on a list if you ask for pics)...

Any recommendations in the Lafayette/Lake Chuck area..we are pretty flexible, but will be traveling to the Newton TX area. Any live zydeco, food (crawfish boil is what Im after) recommendations or anything else to see/do something unique? TIA

https://kliebertgatortours.com/ just a mile south down I-55 from Hammond. My kids (age 10-13) had a blast, and the owner put on a GREAT show.

Take an airboat tour at https://www.mcgeesswamptours.com in Henderson. Don't bother with the boring group tour.

ETA- Lafayette area stuff:

Maybe check out Vermilionville. It's an Acadian village/museum that is good cultural stuff for kids. On Saturdays, there is some kind of live music. At certain times, Vermilionville has really great events, music, etc. but unfortunately it's still scaled way back because of Covid.

Most of the live local music/festival types of things in the Lafayette area are still not going on because of Covid.

Cypress Lake on the UL-Lafayette campus is great for kids. It's a very small lake/swamp filled with cypress trees. You would almost certainly see alligators. (I don't know if this is the kind of thing you're looking for but kids usually love it.)

If you do go to Cypress Lake, you could go see St. John Cathedral in downtown Lafayette. Next to the Cathedral is a giant Live Oak tree that is supposedly 500 years old (or something like that).

Also, if you're downtown, maybe take the kid to Borden's Ice Cream Shoppe. It's the last of its kind in existence.

If you like hiking and swamp scenery, try the levee trail at Lake Martin (between Lafayette and Breaux Bridge). Lake Martin is also famous for the Bird Rookery where big groups of egrets and other similar birds nest all at once. I can't remember if the birds are still nesting at this time of the year.

The Tabasco factory tour at Avery Island is still closed but you can book a free drive thru tour of Jungle Gardens on Avery Island. Avery Island is a little out of the way, though.

For boiled crawfish, two of the most popular are Louisiana Crawfish Time and Dwights. I'm not really an expert because on crawfish places because I'm usually boiling them myself or eating crawfish at someone's crawfish boil.

Cajun Food Tours - This is in Lafayette. I've never done it because I'm a local but all the people I know who have done it loved it.
