TB Discussion: Booking connecting flights separately

So we are looking at a trip to Italy later next year. Looked at Delta and a comfort+ flight out of MSY or BTR is around $6K and basic economy is about $3K with a layover in ATL. If I book the exact same flights separately from BTR to ATL and then book ATL to Italy, the price is half, and that’s upgrading the BTR-ATL flight to first class.
Anyone ever booked flights separately and what were your experiences?
Is the only downside that if you are delayed they won’t rebook your other flight?
Is there anyway to get the airline to charge the price or lower the price since the layover flight is double the price?
TIA for you experiences and advice.

If the connecting flights are on the same airline, they will usually protect you in the event of a delay. They will also likely connect your luggage.
Those things do not hold true when flying different airlines. If I need a positioning flight on another airline before a long-haul flight, I usually want to make the day before, to avoid the risk of losing the whole vacation.
For me, it's usually less of a concern on the way back, because then we aren't talking about a ruined vacation.

I rarely check a bag. Maybe getting to your connecting city the day before might make it worth it if you stayed at a cheap hotel.

GOP had a good comment
The protection is true. I have also run into checkin agents not being able to through check luggage on separate reservations. Luckily I had 5 hours in JFK to go to baggage claim and then recheck using the next ticket. Just a note- your originating airport will be unable to print you a boarding pass for the second flight at least in my case. I tried at checkin and with a separate agent with no luck. Maybe I just got incompetent agents?
For a layover, if you do end up booking this then give yourself time in Atlanta. What might be even better is if there's a schedule change and you can get delta to combine both tickets into one
