Lucky, I’ve been wanting to go for a few years now. Take lots of pics and tell us all about it.

Few others have asked about it on here but nobody had been to offer advice.

I was there a couple of years ago. Stayed a couple of blocks off main town square via Airbnb for dirt cheap. Wife and I went for a concert at Casa Hyder. It's a small place and you can get it all in in a couple of days. Pretty much all restaurants are great. We purposely went w/o plans and just discovered while there. It's safe, and a great laid back feel.

Drinks/dinner on the rosewood rooftop is solid. If you go to the mercado de artasains (like the french market) eat at ole ole, awesome fajitas. We mostly hung out around town, didn't go do any activities outside as we were just there for the weekend. I would bring earplugs if you are staying anywhere around the centro. Bells ringing and fireworks all hours of the day/night while we were there.

I pulled the below my wedding site. I've only been to some of these places.

- Ole Ole - one of the most charming and original restaurants in San Miguel de Allende. The owners are bullfighting aficionados and the restaurant is an expression of their passion for the art (i.e. matador posters and mounted bull heads on the walls). Ole Ole specializes in grilled main courses. Recommendation: Beef fajitas (so tender!).

- Pueblo Viejo/rooftop terrace La Azotea (same building just two names) - Recommendation: shrimp jicama tacos (delicious). Good live music.

- Cumpanio - delicious pastries

- Atrio - awesome rooftop terrace! Great sunset views. Reservations highly recommended for dinner. (upscale casual)

- La Alborada - Recommended to us by our wedding planner! Great lunch spot for authentic Mexican food and a cold beer. NO CREDIT CARDS. CASH ONLY.

RECOMMENDATIONS FROM OUR WEDDING PLANNER WHO HAS LIVED IN SAN MIGUEL HER WHOLE LIFE

Breakfast
- Cumpanio on Correo #29,
- Café de La Parroquia on Jesus Street.
- Café Contento on Hernandez Macias #72
- El pegaso on Corregidora # 6 one of the local favorites, my favorite chilquiles rojos!!
- The bagel café, on Correo Street, has the best bagels in the region.
- Juan´s Café, Relox 37
- Café Muro, calle Loreto 10-B, offers great Mexican antojitos. So if you have a slight craving for sopes or enchiladas this is the place.
- San Agustin, san Francisco #21, famous cafeteria due to its renowned owner, Margarita Gralia. Offers a variety of hot chocolate and churros, but that’s not all. They also have breakfast, lunch and dinner. Just make sure to go early, since the place is small and there is always a wait.
- Rincon de Don Tomas, situated in the heart of San Miguel´s square. Great place to sit and chat while having a cup of coffee and see what San Miguel is all about.
- Ten Ten Pie, Cuna de Allende #21, located a block back from the Parroquia (big church in the main square). This place offers a breakfast, lunch and dinner. It has a terrace and it's location makes it a wonderful option.
- Tortitlan, Juarez #17, if you are in the mood for a great torta this is the place.

Lunch
- La Alborada is a very small and inexpensive good restaurant in Diez de Sollano.
- Bougainvillea located in Mesones # 101.
- Pueblo Viejo, has the feel of an old town and the food is very good, try the molcajete, but make sure you are hungry or you share meals (large portion sizes) on Umaran # 6
- La Azotea, located inside Pueblo Viejo on the rooftop. This place offers stunning views and great tapas. The jicama shrimp tacos are highly recommended.
- Atrio: in cuna de Allende fabulous view, amazing food and service.
- The Restaurant… great food, amazing patio. Diez de Sollano # 16.
- La Cevicheria: amazing ceviches and great fish tacos, is a must. Correo in the corner of Diez de Sollano
- Felling homesick head on down to Hecho en Mexico located in Ancha de San Antonio # 8, and enjoy their rosemary chicken
- Hotel Matilda offers renowned chef Enrique Olvera´s Moxi. Everything is absolutely incredible; the address is Aldama # 5.
- The Rosewood hotel offers great salads, hamburgers and a beautiful view of the city´s skyline. Calle Nemesio Dias # 11.
- La Parada, Recreo # 96. Peruvian cuisine. Rated #1 on trip advisor, no need to say more.
- If you are looking to satisfy you sweet tooth make sure to stop by Petit Four, Mesones 99-1, you will find a great variety of freshly baked croissants, sandwiches, French baguettes, etc. Don't leave without trying some of their delicious chocolate truffles with Mescal or a traditional French macaroon in a variety of flavors. If you are in the mood for something out of this world then make sure you try an éclair au chocolate or one of the mixed fresh fruit tartlets.
- Or if you are in the mood for a light lunch stop by at Nectar, Correo #43, enjoy a salad and a tea. They have a wide variety of teas.

Great Sunset Views
San Miguel is known for its beautiful sunsets, so head to one of these locations to get a great view.
- La Azotea at Pueblo Viejo. Sip a Margarita or Mojito and enjoy one of their great tapas. (Umaran # 6)
- Mx Terrace bar, great place for drinks
- Ocre: Hidalgo # 5. Great terrace very good food.
- Marsala : Hernandez Macias 48. Mexican/Mediterranean
- Nomada; Hernandez Macias 88. Fusion Mexican.
- La Grotta: Cuadrante # 5. Great pizzas.
- La Luna at Rosewood, one of the best views in town.
- La Terraza del Pegaso is also a great option.
- Hotel 1810 has an amazing view of town. Hidalgo Street.
- See the Sunset at La Azotea. Everyday if possible

Dinner
- Tio Lucas - Jazz and very good Mexican food, everything is good. Mesones 103.
- Traditional Mexican food - go to La Posadita, Cuna de Allende #13. Enjoy your favorite Mexican dish while enjoying the breath taking views of the city.
- Aperi inside the hotel Dos Casas has an extraordinary chef. The address is Quebrada # 101.
- The Rosewood hotel has an amazing smoked tuna, try it. The brunch on Sundays is really great.
- Doce: Relox # 12. Visit the food court, they have everything.
- Food factory, great ambiance, fusion food at the La Aurora factory
- Mezcaleria San Mezcal: Recreo # 96. Great variety of mescals.

After Dinner - Nightlife
- Hank´s
- Berlin Bar and Restaurant (run by expatriates from Germany)
- Tio Lucas
- The Restaurant
- La Luna Hotel Rosewood
- Hotel Matilda.
- Mama Mia, located on Umaran, has 4 different bar areas, making it a great option for all age groups. Salsa is played in the restaurant area every day, but it is best on Fridays, and Saturdays after 9:00 p.m.
- La azotea (roof top) Friday and Saturday.
- If you like mescal, la Mescalero is your place. They offer a great variety of different flavored cocktails with mescal. Excellent for hot days or just to unwind.
- El Grito. Night club for the young crowd. Nice place to go after Mama Mia if you still have energy to burn.
- Duke Mesones # 99 A club for the young crowd. Great music and party environment.

Fun fact: Matilda is owned by a guy with Lake Charles roots. It was Condé Nast’s #3 hotel in the world in 2016, IIRC.

Harold "Spook" Stream III. Quite the character from what I've heard. Was married for a few years to Lynn Anderson, the country singer.

Hotel is named for his Mother.

Bumped this tread because we are headed there in June. We were planning on staying at the Belmond Casa de Serra until reading this thread. After looking up Matilda, think we will be switching to it. Any updated info on cool stuff to do or see in San Miguel is greatly appreciated!

Enjoy! My family had a great trip. Like most, I didn't come back to update and it's now been over a year but here are some highlights that I remember.

We stayed at an AirBnb near the big market. If you are within several blocks of the Parroquia, it's a good location. I know there are some great properties up the mountain, but walking home after a night out would be a chore. That being said, Uber was dirt cheap. As for hotels, the Belmond and the Matilda looked very nice and the Rosewood was beautiful. We spent a couple of sunsets on the roof there. Get there early as they limit access if not a guest.

JL's recommendations above were great. We enjoyed The Restaurant and Bovine for a couple of nicer meals. Hit a few hole in the wall taco places for lunch and weren't disappointed in any.

There is a walking tour of the city run by expats that funds medical care for rural children. Meets in front of the Parroquia. Our guide was knowledgeable and was good to get the layout of the town. Think it was free with donations accepted but may have been a few bucks.

We wandered around, browsed the markets, hit some galleries, explored the big park by the Rosewood. There is plenty to see in the main part of town. But the Fabrica la Aurora is a huge converted textile mill with lots of galleries, shops and a couple of restaurants on the outskirts that was nice.

We spent a morning at La Gruta Spa, a natural hot springs, with several pools and a grotto. Nothing spectacular but was worth it. It's a 20 minute Uber north of town.

It was a relaxing five days, good food and drink, no pressure to do anything. Bring good walking shoes- cobblestone streets, narrow sidewalks and steep hills are everywhere.

some of us really love mexico's colonial gems...

so...
how about yall just keep what you know....to yourself.

if pretty cool have such world class cultural destinations right across the border that america more or less ignores.

(i'm totally cool not having to deal with crowds)

Loved San Miguel. We spent some time at the natural springs but mainly just winged it and explored the town on our own. It still blows my mind that somehow Starbucks made it into the town square.

Horseback riding. We went with some dude who drove us out 30 minutes to his family’s massive ranch and it felt like we were in the middle of Big Bend or something. Amazing experience that has almost ruined other horseback riding for me.
