Road trip recs from Central TX to Myrtle Beach

Driving 1280 miles. Going up through NE TX & then I20 East. Gonna stop probably somewhere in Alabama to sleep then push through the next day. I want nothing to do with Atlanta so we're gonna detour around it to the south then re-route to Myrtle Beach. Families first road trip through the deep south. Looking forward to it & hoping for some tips from y'all. Thanks!

Go to Brookgreen Gardens. It's between Litchfield and Murrells Inlet, which is about half an hour south of Myrtle Beach. If you're looking to experience Southern culture, it's the perfect setting, as the entire grounds still feels like you're in a Georgetown County plantation in the 18th century. Also, right across the highway from Brookgreen is Huntington Beach State Park, which is a lovely place to spend a relatively quiet day at the beach and tour Atalaya Castle.

I’m surprised SCLib didn’t recommend Scott’s BBQ in Hemingway, SC. It’s probably a little off your route but worth it IMO.
I 2nd Brookgreen Gardens & Huntington Beach State Park and recommend reading about Huntington & his artist daughter in law. It will make the visit more interesting. They also have a small zoo and boat tours. How old are the kids?
What is your route to avoid Atlanta?

quote:Do you mean you’re taking the 285 loop to the south to avoid downtown? I-20 between 285 is usually not that bad; the intersections of 20 & 285 on the west & east side are bad depending on the time of day.
Going around Atlanta to the south.
If you mean going further south and avoiding Atlanta completely then you will add a lot of travel time.
The kids might like the alligator farm in MB.
