Rick Steves is the expert on this and has a packing list on his website with some youtube video explanations if you look them up. Be aware you can't get into some places in Europe in shorts, open-toed shoes and bare shoulders. This dress code applies to most churches and museums in Italy.

Some great advice so far…we haven’t checked bags for 3 European trips and it’s saved us a ton of headaches.
One idea is to ship some of your worn clothes back home “on the slow boat”/cheapest way back. You can also ship back some souvenirs/glassware if you wrap properly in used T-shirt’s, etc.
It helped us lighten our load especially if you’re leaving cooler climates and heading to warmer (we shipped in Switzerland before leaving for Paris)
