Anyone have any experience with this area?

My parents rented a place for the winter there for several years and liked it, they lived in the upper mid-west icebox and needed a break from that.
The best thing about Oceanside is probably that there is a convenient train that runs down to San Diego or up to LA. And there is a strawberry stand that has pretty amazing strawberries. I liked Oceanside well enough when I visited them.

I was stationed at Camp Pendleton and would spend the majority of weekends there. The sunset by the pier is amazing, there are a lot of food options in the area, the beach is small, but nice, and like the poster above me said, the train station is right there. Not sure where you plan on staying, but almost everything is walking distance. The beach and town used to be pretty trashy, but the city is going through a rebirth where they are trying to cater to tourists more than the locals and Marines, which is making the area nicer IMO.
ETA: If you go, grab some pizza at Breakwater Brewing and a beer at the Stone Brewing taproom located there.

Stay a little further down the beach in Carlsbad. I lived out there for 10 years and move away just about a year ago.
