Had a free 7 night stay at Massanuten resort for Mardi Gras break. Flying into DC plan on visiting capital then heading to resort. Staying Friday to Wednesday cause of work. Anyone been to resort? Plan on skiing, water park, tubing and maybe trip to Busch Gardens (if open). 5 and 10 year old sons coming with me. Anything else in area to see or do? How is Massanutten?

Luray Caverns are about 40 minutes north of the resort. In addition to the caverns they have a small, but very cool, old car museum.

Harpers Ferry is about 2 hours to the north and that is worth the visit IMO. There are many other historical sites & battlefields if that interest you.

Natural Bridge State Park is a little over an hour south. The kids might like that; it has about a mile long easy walk along a creek. It ends at a not very impressive waterfall.

It might be too cold for tubing in early March.

I don't think they have a fort.

It is a National Historic Park and compact, so you don't have to do a lot of walking. There is very little parking so you may have to park at the visitor center and take the shuttle; about a mile or you can walk a trail. We went in November and found parking at the Amtrak station which is near downtown.

Basically you walk around town. They have several small museums with displays of how they made guns. Some of them have short videos about the history of HF, it flooded at lot, and why John Brown attacked, they made guns there.

The App. Trail goes through there and you can walk across the river next to the RR bridge to get to Maryland heights and there are trails there. Many pictures you see of HF are taken from there as they show the town and the convergence of the rivers.

There were bunch of school kids there on a field trip. Up the hill from the river area are restaurants. We had some excellent hot apple cider in one but it was about 40 degrees.

This is looking across the river to Maryland where there are trails. The walk next to the RR is part of the App Trail.

Inside the caverns. It takes about an hour but you may have to wait to start. Think we waited less than an hour.

I’ve never been there, I think it’s a humble but fun place?

If you’re driving around, you could take a trip down to Charlottesville, or see some battlefields.

Your boys should love the museums in DC - the Spy museum and the Air and Space museum are especially fun.

Very nice resort. Mountains when it snows are pretty. Luray Caverns is definitely worth the trip. Kids will love it. You arent really close to Busch Gardens plus traffic can be really bad going that way depending on the time of day. I dont think they are open in Feb. Kings Dominion is a nice amusement park north of Richmond and they do a special weekend event on several weekends around Mardi Gras. They have a lot of good roller coasters. DC traffic is always bad. I would avoid I95 as much as possible. Its a 90 mile traffic jam every single day. Snow tubing at Massanutten is fun. Kids will love it !!

Massanutten is a nice little resort...nothing fancy, but usually well run.

If you like skiiing, 3 hours to Snowshoe from there plus 2 to 2.5 hours to Canaan Valley, Timblerline...and if snow is on the ground you can do White Grass Cross Country ski near Canaan.

Also, you are very close to visiting Monticello which is a great visit with kids.
