Thinking of renting a small cabin on a lake near Waterville. Perfect location, size, etc...but it didn't have air conditioning. Will that be a no-go in later August or seeing that it is in Maine and on the water, just open windows and let breeze cool you down?

Early June is a fantastic time to visit Maine – the weather is just right for outdoor fun. Flying into Portland is a great start. From there, you've got plenty of options. For hiking, you can't miss Acadia National Park. It's a bit of a drive, but it's worth it. The views are stunning, and there are trails for all levels. Closer to Portland, check out Bradbury Mountain State Park. It's smaller but has some excellent trails and a great spot for a picnic. While you're in the area, visiting a winery is a must. I'd recommend Cellardoor Winery in Lincolnville. They've got a lovely selection, and the views of the vineyard are just beautiful. For a bit of local flavor, head over to DaVinci's Eatery. They also have a restaurant in Lewiston NY. It's a cozy spot with a relaxed vibe, perfect for unwinding after a day of adventure.

I realize this is an older thread, and OP's June trip is past, but for those still planning a trip to Maine, here is what we did one June several years ago:
We flew into Bangor, rented a car and went to Bar Harbor for 4 days. Stayed at the Bar Harbor Inn, right on the water. Explored that region, Acadia National Park, hit lobster pounds, etc. Great area.
Then we drove down the coast over the course of a few days, stopping in Camden, Rockland, Portland (took ferry to Peaks Island for a day visit), etc. along the way. Wife photographed every lighthouse and got some great pics that are still hanging on our walls.
In Kennebunkport, a waiter suggested we head over to NH and check out the White Mountains National Forest, so we did that and went up Mount Washington (very cool) to see the location of the world's worst weather. Worked our way back to Portland and flew home.
We went in early June, and we learned that (at least back then), their tourist season does not really start until about June 15. A couple of things were still closed for winter, and school was still in session, but hotel rooms and cabins were readily available; we went with no reservations after Bar Harbor and had no problem. One landlord told us that every cabin was available for us, but she was 100% booked starting the week after. Plan accordingly.
