It might cost more, but Pelliston (PLN) would be your best choice. Take Delta. 20-minute drive to Mackinaw City and catch the ferry.
Or, fly into Traverse City. American or Delta. About a 2 hour drive. Consider staying there for a few days. It's about my favorite area of the country when the weather's good.

There are two lake races to Mac. be warned a few hundred boats finish there and stay for the awards (drunk sailors) ceremony. I Rrr one.

I’ve never stayed on the island, but have visited by ferry. It’s a definite bucket list item.

Will still be chilly there that time of year. Call around to make sure most of the stores and restaurants are going to be open when you plan to go.

May is way too early to go there. July and Aug are perfect. Stay in Mackinac city and take the ferry to the island
