Going to be driving and looking to break the trip up as I well, hate driving. Wife is wanting to go somewhere like Asheville NC. Kind of wanting to stay close to a town but maybe in a cabin with decent river fishing areas. I know I’ll want to break the trip up heading that way. Looking for ideas in NC or maybe TN that is great for kids but a wife that likes some city life also. Good chance we will be actually leaving from W.Monroe as her friends have a get together day before we leave.

She does albeit being a city girl want to do white water rafting and such, but just wants a decent size town nearby. This will be in June. I’d have 7-8 days available to make this trip. When I say decent size town I want to emphasize town not big city is perfectly fine. TIA

As far as budget, hoping to keep under 2k if possible or not much more

We stayed near Mars Hill, NC recently. Nice little town. There’s a small university there, had good food at the restaurants (nothing fancy,) and there’s a big grocery store there. The cabin where we stayed was about 15-20 minutes from town, but it was up in the mountains with a great view. There’s probably other options closer to town and a river, but the view was what we wanted. We hiked, rafted, and took a couple of trips to Asheville and Johnson City.

You have plenty of options and there are numerous threads about Byson City/Asheville area and if you are looking for a real town thats what I would work with. Areas in TN are more tourist towns not much character beyond that or they are small towns like Townsend. You will not find better fly fishing anywhere else. Are you wanting to rent a cabin? Or hotel?
