Lobstering in the Keys

Been wanting to do this for several years now. Going to get it done this summer. Anyone have any suggestions on the best charter companies and where in the Keys is best? Gonna be there for 3-4 days, so looking for a few other things to do other than eat and drink.

I've been about 10 times, it's an awesome time. We bring our own boat. Charting is going to be difficult. Best bet is a scuba charter. 3-4 days is going to be tight. You start at daylight wed and Thursday so the days are long
ETA, off the content keys are the easiest place to find them.

Make sure you are in season and keep to size.
Anchoring in reefs is usually forbidden.

We rented a pontoon boat about 15 years ago and 3 air tanks per person, yeah it was a slow boat but we left early to get there just at the right time, we pulled a diver using a snorkel behind us slowly when we got in the area to find the rock fields. At the depths you will dive you will run out of air before you run out of bottom time. We were getting more than an hour out of a tank. We cleaned their asses out ! I’ve heard that it’s slowed down a bit the last few years.

The season only last for 2-3 days. Be prepared to get pulled over by law enforcement for boat and stash checks. Happened to us twice over the weekend.
We witnessed a boater get fined 6K and boat conficated for having too many lobsters and not the right size. Also make sure your tail measuring stick is attached to your tickler. They are big on this.
There are bouys to tie up to over the reefs so you shouldn't have to anchor.

The season lasts 8 months. There is a 3 day mini season in July that is an absolute shite show for some reason. Warren Sapp got bit by a shark during it a few years ago. Too many Miami people and too many boats.
As for renting a charter boat it is very easy. Any charter boat guy will take you out to do anything you want to do from hanging at a sandbar to going out for sunset, whatever.
My guy Mike at
Booking@islandtimecharterkeywest.com
will take people out to do whatever they want.
Most charter boat guys will, they just want the boat to be booked.
For lobsters it’s just basic snorkel gear, a tickle stick, and a net. Almost anything else more than that is illegal.

Its not that bad, just a bit crowded. But there are more lobsters and no traps. Two days, FWIW

What does this have to do with anything

The lasso or bully netting at night as well
Still not sure if OP is doing scuba or snorkel for this trip. makes a difference

I think of it as 3 days because the invasion starts the day before. The last 5 years we were out of town most of that month but we will be here this year.

Just rent a boat and do if yourself.

Wrong, mini season is that short. Regular season is about 8 months.

Better book place to stay now if you go during mini.
