Too little time in Rome. I'd bump it to four in Rome, especially if it is your entry point to Italy, and then do the rest in Tuscany.

Personally, three nights and two days in Rome would be enough for me. The food is not nearly as good IMO as what you can get further north and it's much more expensive in Rome. The main sights can be seen/visited in a couple of days.

To the OP. You should decide what region(s) you want to see in Italy as there are a ton of places to visit. Trying to do Sicily to Venice and everything in between is a dumb idea as you'll spend more time traveling that you will experiencing. Do a little research and choose 2-3 areas you'd like to visit and focus on those. There's always the future to revisit or see other places on your list.

My wife wants to go on a vacation to Italy. I'm planning on doing it sometime between November 2017 and May 2018. We are both in our early 30's with not a whole lot of foreign travel outside all inclusives in Mexico and the Caribbean. I'm thinking of a 2 Week vacation maybe 3. We aren't trying to go broke. I have a few questions to help me get started.... 1. Where should I be looking to book the flights? 2. Any idea on broad areas and attractions that are a must visit? 3. Train tickets? 4. Hostels vs hotels? Suggestions on both. 5. Budgeting food? 6. Backpacking forums? 7. Budgeting in general? 8. Tips and tricks? Thanks for any help.

This is what I do. We have an Italy trio coming up this summer. Our company is based on budget traveling but know have a little higher end trips. If you are interested, I could email you all of our info that details everything. That way you would have a really good idea.
