Mother-daughter trip for me and my 11-year old daughter. Looking for hotel options that will be reasonably safe for us, and offering good access to the state park in NF.

Cleveland: Only there for 1 night. Is the area around the Christmas Story House generally safe? If so, I'll just grab a hotel there.

Erie: There are hotels connected to a big indoor waterpark (Splash Lagoon). Anyone been? Fun for adults and an 11-year old, or is it more for younger kids?

Niagara Falls: Will visit the Canada side but am booking tours/hotel on the NY side in case getting into Canada is just too difficult with Covid testing, etc. Any recommendations for a hotel on the NY side? Closest looks to be a Comfort Inn and a Hyatt Place. There are a few others a bit further away (but I’m guessing still in walking distance?) – Seneca Resort/Casino, Wingate, Doubletree, Hampton Inn, Fairfield Inn.

Thanks.

We were in NF in May and we stayed at the Courtyard on Rainbow/ John Daly Blvd. It is 1.3 miles, 29 min walk, from there to Terrapin Point in NF State Park. Our female traveling companion walked there and back each morning for exercise but we drove when we went to see the falls.

If I were going I would probably stay at the Double Tree; i.e., Hilton Honors member.

There are other hotels, chain and otherwise, closer than the Courtyard. The closest local one is probably the Red Coach Inn. We ate dinner there one night as it was recommended to us by the hotel clerk. It was ok but not as good as I expected. We got a really good breakfast at the SPOT which is next to the RCI.

NF, the city, is in transition. They have lost 1/2 their population in past 40 years or so and it shows. That area seems safe, not a lot of folks just hanging around on street corners, but a lot of the older homes are not livable anymore and many have been torn down. They lost a lot of industry. It was sad but the falls are great.

That is looking west from the intersection of Rainbow and Daly Blvds at about 2:30 pm on a Tuesday. The casino pictured below is to the right. I think that is a Fairfield Inn on the left.

Edit: We were there before Memorial Day, the Canadian side was shut down and I think the casino had just reopened. There may be more people there now compared to May.

To answer the Cleveland part of the trip.. no that area isn’t what I’d call “safe” it’s in a pretty cool/ hip neighborhood called Tremont but you won’t find a nice hotel really nearby. I’d stay downtown and just take in the restaurants or things to do there or Uber to the Christmas story house if you’re checking it out.

Thank you for the input. Will definitely book a downtown Cleveland hotel instead of near the Christmas Story house, and am also considering staying at a NF hotel not in the immediate falls area. Pictures were helpful, thank you.

If you don’t walk, there was plenty of parking on Goat Island when we were there; it cost $10, and it is probably more crowded now but if you get there early findings a spot should not be difficult.

There are several other (Whirlpool & Devils Hole) parks down river toward the lake that are not to far. We did not go to Fort Niagara SP.

Hopefully the Canadian side will be open.
