Leaving Monday with my wife for the island any advice on where to eat, what to do, etc? Staying at Villa la Bella for 6 nights.
Also staying in Cancun last night because of early flight. Any recommendations on restaurant or things to do there (only have half a day)?

Eat at Basto's. Don't go on Thursday, they're closed.

Eat at Dopi's on Hidalgo Street. Lobster burrito or lobster tacos but most everything on the menu is excellent.

Rent a golf cart for a day and head down to walk the trails along the southern point at Punta Sur. Hit The Joint and Soggy Peso on the way back for drinks and food. Breakfast Mojito at The Joint is legit. The margarita at Soggy Peso is no joke. Two and you're wasted.

Do you mainly spend time at the beach at Isla? I'm trying to get a feel for what most people do for most of the day while there.

The hotel we stay at has a private beach. We generally hang out there until lunch. The hotel staff brings us lunch from a local restaurant. After that we might stroll around Hidalgo Street or go out for drinks before dinner or just lounge around for a bit. On golf cart days we're out and about on the island all day long. It's a very safe island. We go everywhere on it and have always felt safe.

Please post back and let us know how your trip was. I am flying into CUN May 7-12 and I still don't have a place to stay. Kind of a dad and daughter trip so I definitely need two bedrooms. We both like to snorkel and I like to dive. Isla Mujeres is his first choice, but we have never been. Usually take the whole family to playa del carmen and further south. Really clueless on Isla. It looks beautiful.

Isla and Cancun are two different animals. You can go anywhere on Isla and be perfectly safe. This is not true of Cancun.

I go once or twice a year. This February eight very picky friends who travel extensively joined us on Isla and they loved it.

I am just having a hard time deciding or knowing where to stay. I know a lot of the rental agencies in Puerto Aventuras and know exactly where most places are. Same is true for Playa Del Carmen. With Isla I have no clue. I can't seem to find a 2 bedroom that doesn't look like 1/2 shithole. When I do find things that I like it's far south or mid island. I like the isla 33 condos and sotavento, so far. Also how's the diving?? Which shop do I pick? I am a certified amateur. Padi. I am used to the same dive shops (phantom in playa and dive Aventuras is PA). I have dived with almost all of their guides in tiny groups if not privately. I like that.

Links getting downvotes. Guess it’s time for some high resolution photos.

I hear the diving is great. I know it is in Cancun. If you’re there during whale shark season you’re in for a treat.

It’s a small island. You can rent a golf cart and be anywhere on the island in10-15 minutes. So mid island isn’t a bad thing.

Was planning on fishing and snorkeling. Any advice? I have always been successful in finding local fishermen and bargaining with them on fishing/snorkeling trip. Thanks

That is exactly what you should do. Head over to the marina around 5 and talk to the guys cleaning the fish. They'll hook you up.

Go to the marina like VABuckeye mentioned....see pics below of who we picked and what we did. It was $250 for fishing and snorkeling all day. Just me and my wife (no pics). They will make ceviche for you while their buddies cook your catch.

Damn. I love it there.

That fish grilled over the fire with achiote paste is spectacular.
