So I go to Isla Mujeres a good bit having gone 5 times in the last year. I love it there and it's my quick go to cheap vacation I constantly take. ($200-250 rt direct flight from NOLA multiple times a week. 20 minute ferry, 20 minute private van transfer.
With the Mexican E gate entry it's almost like a domestic flight.

Anyway. Last weekend I was having a talk with some people who talked up Holbox a being more enjoyable and others talking about Balacar being the most beautiful natural area.
These areas require a little more travel.
The Tren Maya isn't fully up yet so I guess I would take the ADO bus to either destination from cancun.
Balacar being a super long drive.

Renting a car is an option but I would prefer the bus (ADOs are nicer than greyhound) .

I'm sure some here have been to both.
If I'm obsessed with Mujeres will I enjoy Holbox?

I just like to lay on the beach all day. A nice beach bed is all I need.

Like I just sat in this spot for hours. Staring into the void forgetting all my troubles clearing my mind. To me it's zen.

Go to Bacalar if a super chill vibe is your thing, but go soon because it is no longer a hidden secret and is getting visited by more and more people every year.

Isla Mujeres is an amazing place but is quickly, and sadly, becoming over commercialized just like Ambergris Caye has been over the past 10 years.

Holbox is somewhere in between. There are no cars on the island, golf carts and bicycles for now but that won’t be the case much longer.

We made a return trip to Holbox for our anniversary back in January and I owe this board a trip report. Its only been 4 years since we visited, and the amount of new homes and boutique hotels has doubled. I will say that the restaurant scene is top notch, as is all of the Argentinian eye candy working on the island. Locals on the island are saying it will be the next Tulum within 10 years because they’re planning a new toll road that goes directly from the Cancun airport right up to Cabo Catoche (the most eastern part of Holbox island). It will take about 40 minutes instead of the 2+ hours it does today going through San Angel.

Hit me up if you have any detailed questions or curiosities
