I'll have to think in the old noggin about restaurants. Off the top of my head 1135AD inside the palace in Jaipur was a great experience and the food was good. We found some great deals at Trident hotels, which are very nice but not as expensive as Taj properties. We went off season and snagged $60 a night in Agra and $100 in Jaipur. If you want something simple, bloomrooms in Delhi was cheap but nice, along with another one that was in Connaught Place I'd have to check out, had a weird name (ETA: Hotel Bright). Those ones aren't for hanging around though, no pool or anything lIke that.

I'd also check to see if staying at any of the old palaces can fit in your plans. I believe there are a good bit available in Rajasthan and would probably be a great experience. I also don't think they are too expensive. I'll try to google an example of one that I believe is outside Jaipur.

Lastly, hotel reviews for mid range can be tough. I find Europeans/rest of the world has much lower standards than we do, so a 3 star to them can be close to a Motel in some random West Virginia town. They will mention they stay in Karol Bagh. Backpackers mostly from what I can tell. Seriously, frick that, not for me. That's around where you can do the street kid tour, not where I want to lay my head and pee into a hole.

I believe the palace hotels I was thinking of are called Samode. I'm sure there are a ton. Palaces there are like castles in Europe, everybody has one. But if you have the cash, spending on the luxury hotels is incredible and a one of a kind Indian experience.

ETA: The Spice Route restaurant in Delhi is an incredible atmosphere. Place is crazy detailed. At the Imperial Hotel.

Lodi (The Garden Restaurant) was another spot for atmosphere.
Karim's in Old Delhi is famous
Naivedyam in Hauz Khas I remember really enjoying and it was full of Indians so it had to be legitimate.

Don't know if you'll go to Udaipur, but we walked into this seemingly tourist spot right across from Jagadish Temple, and it ended up being really good. Waiter could only say "SIZZZZLER!" for my fajita-like sizzling plate, which was hilarious but very good. Wish I could recall the name but its touristy rooftop restaurant was literally straight across from the temple steps, while the other ones were slightly off to the sides if I recall correctly.

Ambrai in Udaipur is a great spot to eat at night.

We were in Agra only for a day, and I think we ate at one place that wasn't the hotel, and I recall it being fine and tasting Indian

The absolute worst places for food are the "tourist truck stops." You'll probably have to stop at these at some point with a driver. Make sure what you eat is hot but don't be expecting any thing amazing. Kind of hard to plan ahead for that time of day when you just need something and you are in the middle of nowhere, unless you want to try street food, which I stayed away from for the most part. Save that shite for Thailand

Thanks for all the suggestions! Booking hotels right now. Finding some really great places for around $100 a night. Might splurge and do a nice palace for a night or two.

Thanks for the tip on the truck stops. We are definitely going to hire a private driver. I emailed the guy you had yesterday, but haven't heard back. Any other way you have communicated with him other than email? I love the idea of booking a driver that a fellow tiger fan has used and recommends!

If I can't get in touch with him, how exactly did you find your driver? I have looked on a few sites, and got a quote from one guy for $700 which sounds very high. I think he is trying to rip me off.

Thanks again!

Did you email his hotmail account? There may be some delay due to being on the road/being 10 hours ahead of us. I only communicated with him via email until I got there. Picked up a burner phone at the airport to be able to call him, which was often because my wife and I don't lollygag too much when looking at monuments, so we were quicker than he expected a lot.

I found him just going through Tripadvisor forums and message boards. He was mentioned 4 or 5 times and that was good enough for me. There is a website called IndiaMike that was pretty good too, where you can find a driver if my guy doesn't get back to you, among LOTS of other info.

Let me know if he doesn't get back with you soon, you can also email me at my gmail account which is teddyruxpintiger.

ETA: Also, he never tried to bring us to tout shops. Except in Agra we let him procure a guide for the Taj, who I think was the one who did lead us to tout shops, so if you want to shop on your own and not be in that position, just say so. He also helps keep people away from hounding you, so that's valuable. Just be prepared, the moment you're alone you are going to be hounded

I had a guy online teach me how to say no to them, I think I have it right but I could be off. I believe its "MOO-Chuh-Nay-He-Cha-He-Ya" At least its close in Hindi for "I don't want any" I know we have some Indian posters here that may be able to fix this that may speak Hindi. Of course, your driver can fill you in on the sayings too.

Further edit: Bring WETones or similar. You can't always guarantee TP to be around, and it will keep your hands clean. Also of course, tablet pepto, just start the day with it in your system. India spice is many times hotter than LA spice if you go authentic. It was rainy season so we had repellant and malaria pills as well. Also got my typhoid vaccine. As always, stay away from dairy, non-cooked veggies (water washed), and non bottled water.

I mentioned in the OP that I didn't take pics of food, because I wasn't anticipating reviewing the trip back in 2013. All your standard Indian fare, naan bread, tandoori chicken, all the stuff that burns a hole through your intestine, etc. In the posts above, I've mentioned some restaurants I ate at that came back to mind. I promise to do better with the food and booze on my next adventure.

Though I did take some pics of my food in Thailand. I'm just not much of a food picture taker, but this can be fixed!
