Seeing the Northern lights and seeing the country of Iceland are really two different trips. You should pick one. You don't need 8 to 10 days to see the Northern lights.

Random question...so sounds like seeing the northern lights is more of a long weekend trip. If so, is there somewhere else that is cheaper/quicker to get that northern lights experience ie somewhere in Canada, and then do a bigger 12 day summer trip to Iceland?

Recently read a post/article about Northern Lights and the author said that going to Fairbanks increased the odds of seeing them and at cheaper cost.

We actually just did an Alaskan cruise 3 weeks ago. Flew into Anchorage early in order to go up to Fairbanks and see the lights. Unfortunately there was severe cloud coverage and we weren’t able to see them and couldn’t stay additional days because we had to get on the cruise ship.
