Would it be a good place to live and work? Bare in mind, I am more of a rural type that doesn’t need big city things to be entertained. How’s the price of property there?

Update: the same position has come up in Washington parish. Is that any better?

Depends on what part of lasalle parish. Olla is cheap but a dying area. Houses in Jena are kinda high, but pretty cheap cost of living. Not much entertainment. Have to go to Alex or Monroe.

Natchez isn’t too far either. Is there entertainment there?

Jena is a nice town. It seems to have solid leadership, decent people, and an upward trend in growth. It’s no DFW, BTR, or NOLA for jobs. You’ll likely need to be in the oil field, timber, or have connections higher up in a small business to make any serious money. The schools are solid, if unspectacular. Property prices are reasonable if you’re willing to live a bit outside of town.

The parish as a whole is rather limited. I hope you like pine trees and hills because that’s pretty much all there is. Deer hunting can be had, though the dirt is notoriously poorer and thus will grow less high-end bucks than the river parishes to the east. Duck hunting/fishing may be available in places such as Catahoula Lake, but I’m honestly not sure as to its current standing. Some stink has been going on for quite a while now with that Lake but I’m not close enough to the situation to know the details.

Of the nearby cities (Monroe, Alexandria, and Natchez) Monroe is probably the most complete package for visiting. A jack of all trades, master of none. It’s got a mall and outlet stores for women and kids, a movie theater you likely won’t get shanked at, and a decent spread of both chain and original restaurants to choose between. Nightlife is....meh. A couple of bars and the brewery can be decent.

Natchez has the best restaurant scene and nightlife. There are also lots of historic houses and cutesy shops downtown to see. Kids will likely be bored to tears due to the disappointing mall/movie theater. It’s really a town for a bit more mature crowd.

Alexandria....is getting better. Their movie theater is the best, bar none. Their mall is pretty bad. The restaurant scene has a fair bit of chains (nothing really special) and a couple of decent local joints. There are two really great bars downtown but unless it’s an event weekend or the like they could very well be dead.

All in all you could do much worse than Jena. The location and people are good, surrounding cities are reasonably entertaining, and quality of life just seems on a general upswing.

That was very informative. Thank you for the information! I will definitely consider if this job works out for me.

Speaking as someone who grew up in Jena. Don't do this to yourself or your family.

Decisions very eloquently made LaSalle Parish seem like a quaint little suburb. Trust me, it's not.

Let me expound on this. If you are getting a job in the area, you're set. If not, you won't work in the area. You will have to drive to work. A very large portion of the people who live there do not work in the area.

Respectfully disagree. Much better schools in LA, and that's saying something.

Not untrue.

If you are a hunter and don't own land, then you'll have to join a club. Not all clubs accept non-locals. As far as the lake, on one end someone bought up a bunch of land around the lake and is trying to keep people off the lake in that area. Not sure what's going on with that either. If you want to duck hunt a lease is the best route. Catahoula is crowded for ducks. Or used to be.

All of that is pretty true but think about that. Wanna see a movie in a theater, have to drive an hour. Wanna eat a restaurant. Drive an hour. Wanna drink at a local establishment. Drive an hour.

Do you have kids? If they're not into or good at sports they will be bored. There isn't any boy scouts, girl scouts or after school activities. I doubt there's anyone teaching music or karate. Wanna do all that stuff? You guessed it, drive an hour.

Sure you could do worse. But could do a hell of a lot better. Also, quality of life in Jena is not on an upswing. It's holding steady at best.

I grew up not too far from there. unless ALL you want to do is hunt and fish, I can't see why someone would want to live there. no judgment, it's not a bad place. It's just like many small rural towns in the south... there's very limited opportunity for career growth, education, and entertainment.
