Heading to Peru in July for 10 days

I'll probably be backpacking it most of the way with a few nice hotels every couple of days.
Any can't miss sites besides Machu Piccu, Nazca, Uros Islands?
How about the Inca Trail? Is it worth the pain, or should I just take the train to Aguas Calientes?

If you are an experienced backpacker you should look into the Salkantay Trek (an alternate to the Inca Trail).
Another sick looking trek is the Cordillera Huayhuash:
Cam/Swami has some descriptions of a handful of Peru treks he has taken here.
I haven't been but they look incredible.
eta: what is the permit situation for Machu Picchu? Book any time or far in advance?

You can't really do the trek and all the other stuff in 10 days.
You'll have to just do the fly and train deal.
Machu Picchu trek permits must be obtained far in advance. Same goes for Machu Picchu itself but only a little less so. I booked my MP tickets before they instituted the "half day" morning and afternoon session tickets.
If you want to do any of the other climbs within MP, those are a separate ticket as well with even less allotments that should be booked far in advance. Those come in multiple sessions as well.
I climbed the big mountain behind MP when I went.
Btw the website to book MP tickets is a little wonky. Google "how tos" so you can see how to do it. I'm serious about that point. It's not too bad but for instance, you have to book it all in Spanish because English breaks it, among other things.

Teddy is right, booking MP tickets is difficult because it's all in Spanish. Make sure you google the instructions. Ours messed up and we had to go through a whole ordeal in augas calientes to get t fixed. If you haven't booked the tickets yet you need to asap. For 10 days just hit cusco, olyantambo, and MP. Spend a day in Lima as well. 10 days I kind of short to just winging it.

I just got back from a 14 day trip to Peru. I did do the 4 day Inca trail hike halfway through the trip. It can be difficult depending on your fitness level and ability to deal with the higher altitude. I feel like I appreciated MP more doing a hike there than just taking a train and then the bus up to the site.
You need to book all your tickets for MP well in advanced since they now have limits to the amount of people that can visit the site each day, the same for the three mountain hikes around MP.
I did a couple days in Lima, around Miraflores, and that is all you really need to do there.
Cusco is a great city as well as the sacred valley, which consists of Pisac, the salt mine at Maras and Ollantaytambo. Plus there are just a lot of interesting things to see around there.
I also went to the amazon and stayed in an animal research lodge, which was awesome but looking back I wish I had gone to Lake Titicaca and explored that area more.
Its really hard to go wrong in Peru, just research as much as you can before hand and make a plan around that.
