Just soliciting advice on this location. I'm thinking October might be an ideal time with the temperatures being relatively mild

I have been there on business. The company I work for has a plant near Alexandria. I thought it would be neat to see the pyramids. It was very disappointing and we were swarmed by people trying to sell stuff. Couldn't enjoy the scenery. The area around the pyramids is a desert and I was expecting it to be some sort of a park area and it is pretty much open. I couldn't wait to get away from there. IMHO, find another place to vacation. This place is right up there with India in my book. Can't see why people vacation in India but you see them all the time. Too many people, terrible infrastructure.

I was in Cairo for 2 days for work, and as said above, seeing the pyramids seemed like a great idea. There is a Starbuck’s within earshot of the first pyramid so it didn’t feel or look like what you see on TV. The area was packed full of poverty-stricken merchants trying to sell anything they can. I wasn’t bothered by it so I just checked out what there was to see.
I was surprised how much more lush and tropical Cairo was. Again, TV had me thinking it was all sand and camels. I forgot the Nile river runs right there and there are flowers and nice landscapes here and there.
Don’t miss their museums, they have some really cool artifacts in them that will spin you around and have you question how long ago the Egyptian thrived. They were some smart dudes

frick you man
OP: my dad spent six months there on a military base in the middle of the desert back in 1992. He saw all the cool shite. I'd like to do it some day.
Couple that safaried with us had just come from Egypt and had cruised the Nile. Sounded like a cool way to do it.

I'm a big history guy and have always thought about making the rounds there. I would do a tour as I'm not adventurous enough to do a Muslim country solo

Yeah. It's touristy, but nowhere near as bad as you t was before the revolts. Mubaraks Egypt was too crowded. It's better now.
Just do heavy research and you can avoid the crap tourist areas.
That being said, I prefer Morocco ten-fold.
