Google Maps vs Google My Maps

Which do you prefer to use for trip planning? I've got everything saved on google maps for upcoming trip next week to Big Island, but I'm doing another one in My Maps which I kinda like because you can make your own icons etc. Any of you have preference or use something else?

Whatever you pick, make sure you can download maps for offline use. Overseas, Maps.me worked in a lot of countries, but it started charging a nominal fee. OpenStreetMap is the backend for a lot of those services.
