Galapagos Islands trip

I figure I'd ask my questions about this location in it's own thread. We are considering adding 7 nights/8 days in the Galapagos on the tail end of a 2-week trip to Peru.
Do most people go on the cruises that take you to the different islands or have some of you stayed on an island or two but hopped around some and came back to your island? I'd like to hear some experiences please.
The cruises sound nice, but I absolutely want to dive. Problem is, my wife doesn't, so I don't think doing a diving boat for the whole trip will make her happy
Does it make sense to do land for 2 nights and then a cruise for 5 nights? Any experience? Looking at you, GOP

There was a thread on here recently where a guy just went and at least one other person had commented that had been.
From what I remember you need a boat to access a lot of the places. You are really only diving for 2-3 hours a day right? I'd think something like that would be very doable and just have your wife hang on the boat.

Yeah, I don't plan on making this a dive trip. I just want to at least get in a couple dives. She likes snorkeling enough.

As I said in the other thread, the boats are either dive boats where you do not get to go onto any of the remote islands, or they are tour boats and there's no diving.
If your wife snorkels, then she might enjoy a dive boat, but otherwise, I would suggest that you dive a couple of days at the beginning of the trip, and then a cruise to the remote islands.

When I was there, Isla Española was closed, as there was an outbreak of avian flu that the authorities didn't want to spread to other islands. But, normally, that's regarded as one of the highlights of the Galapagos, as it's the world's only nesting site for the waves albatross, and you can walk right up next to the majestic birds. Most of the tour boats normally go there, but it could also be done as a (long) daytrip from San Cristobal.
