Looking to bring wife & kids (age 6, 8, 10) to California next fall. None of us have ever been.

Want to see Yosemite - can you bike with kids there? (Kids are too young to hike)

Any beaches worth checking out?

Any film industry stuff that would interest the kids?

Other tips/suggestions much appreciated. TIA

What does this mean? I've brought my son hiking multiple times (kid carrier) and he just started walking 2 weeks ago.

Those ages seem like great hike ages. You don't have to do 10 miles.

I think you’d be doing yourselves a disservice not hiking in Yosemite. There are a lot of easy trails there - Rock Creek, Tuolumne River, Yosemite Falls... I think yall should stay there for at least a few days. It’s an amazing place.

Lake Tahoe should also be on the list. You could get a nice cabin up there. Same in Yosemite. Lots of easy trails there as well.

Kings Canyon and Sequoia should also be on the list and are relatively close to Yosemite. Sequoia especially is VERY family friendly.

Point Reyes is nice for the ocean.

Keep in mind CA is extremely big and I think it may be more fun to focus on Northern California or Southern California for one trip.

I've never gone hiking, just pictured a steep walk with a heavy backpack and the kids complaining but this is good to know. We may give it a shot.

Thanks. Thought about flying into SFO, renting a car and driving out to Yosemite, then after 3 days driving to the LA area, then flying out of LAX after a few days. Wife is balking at the 6 hour drive from Yosemite to LA, though. Anyone done a trip like that before?

Wife and I took a trip earlier this year, pretty much how you are planning.

We flew into San Fran, rented a car and drove out to Yosemite for a day. We stayed in a hotel in Modesto about 2 hours from the park... hiked Mist Trail, however there are tons of trails that you can go on with kids that aren't strenuous. I took my son when he was around 5 or 6 on the Glacier Point Loop and he didn't have a problem with it (it gets crowded depending on the season).

The drive from NorCal to SoCal isn't that bad of a drive. If you are going to drive, I suggest just going a couple of more hours south to San Diego and staying there instead of LA. We stayed in SD, went to LA for a day and did the touristy stuff. I use to live in SD, so I am probably biased however I think that you would have a better time in SD than LA. The beaches and people are friendlier.

I'm with the wife. There is no need to drive 6 hours down to LA. After Yosemite, go to Santa Cruz, Monterey/Pacific Grove, Carmel, Big Sur....all are scenic, interesting, family friendly, and within 3 hours of Yosemite.

Picking SoCal or NorCal for this trip is the move. Driving 6 hours from norcal to socal with kids is going to suck. The drive from San fran to yosemite alone will be irritating.

You can’t go wrong with south or north though. South is desert, better beaches, warm. North is lush, mountainous, cooler.

sequoia is about the most family-friendly NP i've ever been to. perfectly safe in the "must see" areas and the hikes are thrilling without being arduous

Thanks for all the info everyone

Any spots in southern CA that you've been to with kids and would recommend? I've got a pretty blank slate at this point.

If you go when the Tioga pass in Yosemite is open, you can hit the eastern sierra and that 395 is a whole other great adventure and much cooler drive to LA. Lots of scenery. Like, amazing and far fewer people than Yosemite.
