I found it pretty easy to drive in Italy and France which I have done several times. The main highways are very good and the smaller country roads have little or no traffic. This statement does not apply for the big cities, the Alps or the Amalfi Coast.

Sorrento to was definitely sketchy in a camper van. Everywhere else was easy to drive in Italy. Aside from trying to read street signs with no knowledge of the language.
Est, Nord, Sud, Ovest.

Yeah.
One time we didn't understand a traffic sign and wound up inside the old city walls of Siena where cars were restricted. We almost drove on to Piazza del Campo, which really would have been trouble, before we took a sharp turn and zig zaged our way out.
With regard to Sorrento, that is part of what I was talking about above when I excluded the Amalfi Coast from my easy driving comment. We hired a private driver for that stretch.

South of Munich in the Bavarian Alps and Austria is really nice this time of year. There are plenty of vacation resorts in small towns and plenty to do. I would suggest you rent a car and there are plenty of nice places and smaller towns you can go too. Salzburg is my favorite , Innsbruck, Kufstein, Garmisch, Chiemsee are a few places. If you have a car you can also drive down through to Italy, Switzerland, France. Going through the Alps this time of year you honestly can't go wrong.
