True, not an island. My bad.
We have had decent luck up by the airport if you don’t mind driving in.
Frankly traffic stinks all over so we are either downtown or staying for price wherever we can and dealing with it

Locals call it a peninsula, ended up staying at the embassy suites and we had a great time. Looks like we will be back soon to find housing. All recs were great help.

close to Shem Creek bars/restaurants.
Trashy and the food isn’t good
The hotels over there are fine and the area is really nice and safe...mostly chain hotels, but as has been noted you're going to spend way less but be close to downtown. And Shem Creek is awesome...we still go over there a bunch, though admittedly usually clear out around sunset before the evenings when the college kids head in (though the scenery is impressive).
Good happy hours, awesome views, dolphin and boat and people watching, good food at places like Tavern and Table, Paige's, the Wreck, live music at Muddy's...can't really go wrong.

Charleston Place is a great hotel in the city.
Just stayed there for a conference about a month ago. It is a nice hotel.
We ate at 82 Queen and Magnolia's. Both pretty good, although at 82 Queen we had such a large group we couldn't order from the main menu.

Magnolia's.
We didn't love Magnolia's the last time we went for multiple reasons, so that one is pretty much off our list moving forward. Too many other great options in town.

From what I understand we were too late in the game to get reservations at the better spots.

You can do walk in and they will almost always get you in, though you'll likely have to wait a bit or come back a bit later, or you can sometimes grab seats at the bar and get the full menu immediately. And this is true for just about anywhere in town. People just don't realize it.
