I thought I'd go ahead and start a thread where we can share information about the recovery and rebuilding efforts in the Caribbean islands. It makes more sense for the information to be in one place.

I'll start with information I received from St. Maarten today.

Keep these islands in your thoughts. If you, like me, have spent time down there and have great memories do what you can to help if you are able.

ISLAND UPDATE 10/10/2017

quote:

We are pleased to advise that Princess Juliana Airport reopened today, October 10, 2017 to commercial flights.

Much work is underway cleaning up the island, and rebuilding as necessary.

As of last week, the following restaurants opened in the
Simpson Bay area:
· Simpson Bay Yacht Club
· Atlantico Bakery
· La Sucriere Bakery
· Karakter
· Toppers
· Buccaneer
· Greenhouse
· 3 Palm’s Restaurant
· Sale & Pepe
· Pat’s (in front of the Boathouse)
· Dinghy Docks
· Crave
· Beirut
· Pizza del Sol
· Top Carrot
· Puerto Del Sol (Italian restaurant)
· German Bavarian restaurant
· Harry’s
· Flavor Express (new restaurant)

As for supermarkets, Market Garden and Sky Market are also opened as well as the Food Express Market in Maho along with their hot buffet. Cars may be rented at Paradise Car Rental and also Empress (please be sure to mention St Martin Beach Rentals).

The island may not be a lush as before, but the flora will return in bold manner. There may be less souvenir and jewelry shops at this time, but the warm sun and beautiful sea is still there along with the friendly people of St Maarten/St Martin.

St. John, USVI

Last week the Westin cancelled all existing reservations until June 30, 2018. They are also not accepting any new reservations, regardless of date.

Caneel Bay announced this week that they will be closed until at least November 2018.

Those are the only two resorts on the island. Most visitors are either day trippers or rent a house or condo. However, the fact that both resorts will be closed for so long is a sad indicator of the damage and lengthy recovery process.

Jost Van Dyke

This one in particular saddens me. I've spent significant time on Jost and know quite a few people there.

quote:

Following Hurricane Irma, most buildings and the infrastructure of Jost Van Dyke were decimated, including most communication channels to the outside.

We have been happy to receive post storm reports that the storm’s survivors were gathering at Foxy’s which turned into a community kitchen and still functions that way. Other restaurants with sealed containers of food such as Soggy Dollar and Hendo’s combined resources bringing these items to Foxy’s.

Jost Van Dyke’s infrastructure is decimated. We are also extremely concerned about the potential threat of Hurricane Maria which is likely to impact Jost Van Dyke and the Virgin Islands over the next few days.

Jost Van Dyke was ravaged almost beyond recognition.

The Moorings Update

Hurricane update

9TH OCTOBER 2017: 12:00 GMT

The local teams in the British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and St. Martin have made great progress in just a short time since Hurricane Irma and Maria passed through these territories. We are working hard along with our partners in the cruising grounds to welcome guests back for the winter sailing season. The BVI and Puerto Rico will re-open December 9, 2017 and St. Martin will re-open February 1, 2018.

We are excited to announce that the British Virgin Islands will receive 130 new boats for a value of $66.5m thanks to the financial strength of our company.

Our destinations in the Bahamas, Belize, Grenada and St. Lucia were unaffected and continue to operate charters normally. In addition, The Moorings will now offer charters from Antigua , booking now for departures starting November 4.

If you have a scheduled charter departure in the BVI and Puerto Rico between now and December 8th 2017, or in St Martin between now and January 31st, please contact our Vacation Planners at (800) 416-0820 or sales@moorings.com (link sends e-mail) for assistance with rearranging your charter if you have not been contacted yet.

Click here (link sends e-mail) to donate to our employee relief fund, which has been set up to help our team members directly affected by the recent Caribbean hurricanes, many of whom have suffered significant losses. As leaders in the yacht charter industry, our goal is to unite sailors everywhere to help these destinations recover as quickly as possible. Thank you for your support of the #CaribbeanComeback. If you wish to help the BVI community directly please consider donating to BVI Relief. bvirelief.org (link sends e-mail).

BVI in General

quote:

Appearing via Skype from Virgin Gorda, Sharon Flax-Brutus, director of tourism, estimated the damage from Irma at $3 billion.
"We were poised to have a record year, but we are recovering and taking a phased approach. The BVI is not open for tourism this month. We are continuing our cleanup in terms of repairs to our electric and power grids. Airports and seaports and will be ready to welcome guests on Nov. 1," she said.
The BVI Sailing Regatta is in March 2018, while the Charter Yacht Society is scheduled for Nov. 27.

The destination's annual Lobster Fest will take place Nov. 25 to 28.
The cruise port in Tortola is "okay," according to Flax-Brutus, but the park facility at the pier had damage. "It will be ready in November," she said.
The BVIs luxury properties, including Little Dix Bay and several high-end villas, had major damage and could take up to two years to return "to their former glory," according to the director.
However, some smaller properties, including Treasure Isle and Sebastian's, will be open this winter.

Anguilla

Reports indicate that critical infrastructure including the hospital, airport, police and fire stations, and utilities had moderate to severe damage. Reports also show that restaurants and general island life have been impacted.

Belmond Cap Juluca: The resort was closed for the season so no guests were on the property. They are continuing to assess the impact of both Hurricane Irma and Jose on the resort. The resort was in the midst of scheduled renovations and will not reopen until late 2018.

CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa: Significant damage; estimated to be closed at minimum 1 year.

The Reef by CuisinArt: Significant damage; estimated to be closed at minimum 1 year.

Four Seasons Resort Anguilla: Non-structural damage reported. Resort was under seasonal closure and will remain closed until April/May 2018.

Malliouhana: No major structural damage but will need to make repairs due to wind and water damage. Will reopen in April 2018.

More BVI

quote:

British Virgin Islands Governor Gus Jaspert declared a state of emergency. Director of Tourism Sharon Flax-Brutus said that the destruction from Hurricane Irma in the BVIs has been devastating. The Tortola cruise port was damaged and is being assessed.

Peter Island Resort and Spa: Extensive damage; will close through 2018.

Necker Island: The team is safe, but the resort sustained extensive damage.

Bitter End Yacht Club: Sustained extensive damage. Closed indefinitely.

Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina: Extensive damage; reports indicate it will be closed for 6 months.

Oil Nut Bay: Communication on Virgin Gorda (the island on which Oil Nut Bay is located) is still very limited. Initial assessments indicate that there was heavy damage but most buildings are still standing. The property will remain closed until a full assessment is made. If you would like to donate to the local community, you can do so through Oil Nut Bay’s non-profit organization, The North Shore Foundation.

Open back up for tourism 10/30. Not sure how much will be open, though.
