Spent 30 yr in Utah, been all over the desert canyons and alone areas, can suggest less well-traveled areas when you're ready to do that way. Also number of places in Wind Rivers, Montana Beartooths, and all over Colorado.

Tishomingo State Park
The Mississippi Mountains. Spent many nights there with family, Boy Scout Troops and Church Youth Groups. Ease down to Belmont, MS and eat a meal at Spark's Diner. Best meat and two plate lunch in the state.

Near Baton Rouge, try Kisatchie, Tunica Hills, or Atchafalaya for primitive camping. Ozarks for hills.
