My stepdaughter is studying abroad in Spain right now. My wife and I are going by ourselves in September when our house remodel is done.

I've been before, but it's been a while. Barcelona is great but more of a young person vibe. A great beach town is Alicante. Porto is freaking awesome.

I travel all the time on vacations and I don't ever even attempt to learn another language. Madrid is one of the few European cities I've been to where there is an actual language barrier if you only know English. Most other places in Spain, it's not a problem.

We did Lisbon, Porto, Duoro valley and the interior on a long trip.

It seemed like everyone spoke good English. I chalked it up to their historical alliance and relationship with the UK.

I did Barcelona, Madrid, and Lisbon about five years ago solo.

I don’t speak a lick of Spanish or Portuguese and had no issues.

In all my travels, I’ve never had a problem. English is about the most universal language in the world. Yeah, you won’t be able to communicate with everyone, but you’ll more than get by in most places.
