Ok, don't laugh, but this has been a bucket list thing for ever and I'm taking my wife/daughter this December.
Look at it as a Bavarian Mardi Gras of sorts. Christmas in Austria is magical. I've been to the markets in Vienna, but really want to go to this just because.
Krampus is like the "Anti Santa". During the Christmas season, he punishes children who have misbehaved. A ritual going back to pagan times. Tradition has it that he is the son of the Norse god of the underworld.
Better Watch Out!
Anyway, back to travel. Krampuslauf (the parade) is generally around 5th December, but it can be anywhere between 1st-7th December. Many cities in Bavaria have parades. I've been told Graz has a wonderful Krampuslauf - large and well-organised. It is also a gorgeous town. But by far a favorite is the Krampuslauf at Bad Goisern. This is a small hilltop town where all the Krampus from surrounding villages come for one almighty parade. Salzburg (old town) has a small Krampuslauf, but the Advent Markets there are worth the trip alone.
That's as much as I know right now. Anyone else got any knowledge on this??

I’ve been to the Krampus parade in Salzburg.....fun, weird to an American, and yes, that part of the world is magical at Christmas.

Alrighty! Knew someone on this board would have been.
I haven't been in Salzburg in years. Assume you were staying there? Did you like it? That could be one of the cities we fly into.
These Krampus parades are all over Bavaria apparently. My analogy in the research is it's like going to Mobile for Mardi Gras vs. Fat Tuesday in New Orleans. There is a difference. That's what I'm trying to figure out in terms of what city to target for a parade. It's only one night of course and then we go over to Ceský Krumlov in Czechia.

I have seen this before. I will be in Fieberbrunn, Austria in a couple weeks. I will have to my friend about this. We have had plenty of discussions before but never about Krampuslauf.
