My brother and I are flying into Vegas and road tripping back to Montana and I want to check out the Sierras, so Sequoia and Kings Canyon were on my radar.

Any recommendations? Worth the visit in late-October? I plan on doing Moro Rock, Big Trees, and Congress.

TIA

Yes, went to both back in early September, 1994.

Great trip.

I do wonder a bit about the weather conditions in late October. You probably will still be okay, but you might want to do a bit of research on that.

In your favor, I'm guessing the crowds will be considerably smaller in late October.

How long are you planning on staying? Are you just sticking to those areas? Closer to Reno is great too. If you hit those areas, there are good spots on your way back to check out.
Confused as to why you would go west of Vegas to go to Montana? I assume just to check out the National Parks there? I’d rather check out some new places along the way to Montana. Personal preference though.

Change of plans. Sequoia just isn't gonna work out this trip.

We plan on leaving McCarran and heading to Mojave to check out the joshua trees, then camping for a few days in Death Valley and hike Telescope, check out Badwater Basin, Dantes View etc and then head up 395 towards Mono Lake and the Bristlecone Forest.

Any Recs above Mono? I believe Tioga Pass will be closed for the season when we get up there so Yosemite isn't gonna work either, which is fine by me.

Lake Tahoe area?

I also went to the Schulman grove of bristlecone pines in early September, 1994. When I left that day in September, it was lightly snowing as I drove back down. Late October could definitely see some cold weather up there in the White Mountains. The Schulman grove is around 10,000 feet above sea level.

Dammit, I was trying to avoid the white stuff

But thanks for the Recs! A little snow won't stop us.

That road up to the bristlecones has lots of twists and turns. Be careful, maintain concentration, and always be alert for someone coming up or down the opposite way.

The drive from Mojave up to Tahoe on Hwy. 395 is gorgeous and you go through a few neat little towns.

Go to LEE Vining and eat at the Chevron station...it is a 4 star restaurant inside that place. I know it sounds crazy but I have been there many times and the food is awesome.

Check out Bodie. Ghost town about 20 minutes off the highway.

Have you considered the Virginia Lakes area? It’s south of Tahoe near Bridgeport.
