We have a very good friend, who stays with us frequently, and is from Pune. He spends most of his time in America, and loves all things American. His wife and daughter lived here, for a short time, but she comes from a wealthy family, and enjoys drivers, maids, cooks, etc. in India. He is currently with them, as he works remote.

He asked us to visit for 2 weeks. He has arranged for a driver, accommodations and is paying for the flight. It is a "once in a lifetime" trip, but we know there can be some concerns. When we went to Colombia, we were both hit with gastro issues, lost about 4 pounds each. The water in India isn't potable, you may not find public restrooms with toilet paper, etc. We love Indian food, but what are some tips, from people who have visited?

We watched a James May episode and they were burning bodies in the same river that people were washing clothes, bathing, urinating, etc.

Long and short, I'd prefer not to die of dysentery.

That guy isn't going to lead you astray.

Drink and brush with bottled water. Eat meats and stay away from cold vegetables/salads (with so much vegetarianism there will be hot options if you go that route), pack some Pepto, and if they give you an option, go with "mild" but do try their version just once to discover the limits to your intestinal fortitude.

You are in South Florida? Just curious where a guy from India randomly goes with wealthy wife still in India?

As said he’s not going to lead you astray and I’m sure they are well versed on how to help foreigners do well. I doubt they would have any issues if you asked them about bottled water and what not ahead of time. As mentioned what gets people often is indirect exposure like lettuce that is washed in water and not cooked.

Until last year, I had been in India for 2-4 weeks annually for over a decade...

as Teddy stated, bottled water all the time...even brushing your teeth. I drank a lot of tea, soda, etc all the time without issue..but remember on soda or anything like that, ask for no ice unless you are sure it is filtered at a nice hotel or "westernized" restaurant

If you like rum, get some Old Monk Army/Military version...just terrific

Also, I always carried a pack of tissue at all times just in case. But your friend is not going to put you in places where it is really bad.

Never give money...I know the poverty is shocking but if you do you will be seriously harassed.

As Teddy also stated...stick with meats, bread, biryani, dosa, etc...cooked vegetables like lentls ok...but anything pickled, washed, etc could be the end of your trip

Also, be ready to go shopping and bring back lots of great clothes and items.

I've never been to Pune but have been to Aurangabad in the same state twice. Pune is a mining center. If you have ever thought about collecting rocks start there... especially zeolite display specimens.

I didn't get sick there on either trip. I did get sick in Dehli both times. It was just 24hr annoyance.

Take the food warnings seriously. See a travel MD and carry a broad-spectrum antibiotic rather than just Pepto or Immodium. Stay away from wildlife and farm animals...rabies!

The bad water and bad food problems stem from a general lack of sanitation. Farm goods are contaminated.
