I went a week or two after you and you came back and posted some really helpful information for me. I appreciated it, it went to good use. Our trip was incredible!

The whales are amazing. On our way to Victoria we were eating dinner and requested a table by the window. All of the sudden we see a whale breach (jump) the water. The whale did it 3 more times. One of the most amazing things I have ever seen and I wish I had been out on deck with my camera ready.
Oh, you were lucky! We saw probably 16-20 whales from our balcony and the dining room. However, we only saw either heads or tails and they never breached! Some of them were really close to the ship and some were further out.

Best bet for whales is to book an excursion out of JNU. Smaller vessels communicate with each other about where the whales are and you can get much closer. To see them bubble net feeding is incredible.
I live across the channel. The crown from my deck

OH nice view! I might have a picture of your house. I'll have to check if I took some of your side. Oh and I so wanted to do the whale watching excursion in Juneau! My husband may have to bring me back just for that!

Yeah, Juneau is pretty damn big, it would take a few days to see most of the highlights. Whale watching is a top tourist activity, along with checking out the icefield. I'm involved with some visitor groups and we've been working on getting more independent tourist.
One of the newer visitors videos. Fairly well done

this area is definitely some of the best whale watching in the world.

Roger is it possible to see the lights during early/mid June? After getting off the ship in Seward I'm looking into possibly spending 3-4 days seeing the interior. Really thinking of getting a rental car and driving North to Denali, Talkeetna, etc. I'm also willing to go far north as Healy if the lights are visible. I'm guessing the more north you go the better the chances?
If we did rent a car in Anchorage and wanted to see the interior of the state what do you suggest we see in 3-4 days with a flight home from Anchorage?

Probably not, latest I've ever seen them is late May. Not saying it's impossible but the odds are against it. They'll be present, just too light. Maybe a huge storm with brilliant lights may be visible.

Great video Roger! I think I will wait a few months before I tell my husband we need to go back!

Thanks for all the info everyone! One more question... Has anyone done the land tours near anchorage/Seward after or prior to the cruise?

I can't help you with that as we didn't do a land tour. Our travel agent at Oak Lane Travel is planning a land tour/Alaskan cruise for next year. You can check out her website for more info.

The Cruise line add ons? My Aunt and Uncle did a Princess land tour a few years ago and felt it was a bit rushed.
I think Princess offers some "on your own" packages that include transporation and lodging. They have their own hotels in AK on the Kenai, Denali, Fairbanks and the Copper River.
Make sure any interior tour includes Talkeetna.
