My very elderly FIL just went back for just the second time since he left in 1978 and he's going to stay for a month. It's very difficult for him as it's a reminder of all that was stolen from him. I showed the hauntingly-gorgeous and long-suffering Mrs Pimp your photos and she got all gooey. GREAT trip report so far-looking forward to the rest .

Me and my wife leave in two weeks for 14 days in Vietnam starting in Hanoi and working south to Saigon. Can’t wait for the rest of your posts.

I hear you. My gf's family has an interesting dynamic, her dad being from the South and her mom from the North. They both met after the war and still to this day are very different.

Her dad is a devout catholic and absolutely loathes Ho Chi Minh and the North. His brother was killed by the Vietcong. Her mom on the other hand is Buddhist and a communist sympathizer.

Neither have family there anymore. Most are spread between Laos, Thailand, the U.S., and France.

Her grandparents also live with them. I would be very interested to hear their stories and views, but they're too old at this point and don't talk much.

This is how you get picked up from the airport in Cambodia

That road hasn't changed a bit

Although Angkor Wat is the main draw here, my favorite temple was what they call the "Tomb Raider" temple, as the movie was filmed here. It's just much cooler how the jungle has overtaken everything.

Ta Prohm is very cool. It did make me smile every time they called it "Toom Rayder". You know the accent.

The gun thing is pretty funny in Saigon. That video reminded me of India. I could never survive driving in those places.

Man, Thailand is so awesome. I could live there.
What section(s) of Bangkok did you go to? The only seedy part we checked out was Soi Cowboy. The neon lights are so cool. Did you make it to Chatuchak market?

And I need to seriously look at a GIF maker or finally get off my lazy arse and edit some video. I have hours of it on my computer. Really helps the review.

Incredible. This has me reflecting hard on my 2.5 month trip to Europe post college. My girlfriend, now wife, joined me for a portion and that trip was probably the best span of time in my life.

I run a an apparel brand and have suppliers in both Vietnam and Thailand. Cannot wait to get over there for "work" at some point.

We stayed in the Sukhumvit area, I wanna say on Soi 10 or so. It was only a few blocks down where the weirdness started. The strip clubs and stuff were around Soi 4 or so I believe.

Is that the big weekend market? My gf's aunt took us there but it was on a Friday so most of it wasn't open unfortunately.

There was really alot of things I wanted to do there that I didn't get to, which has me wanting to go back. I'd very much like to see more of Thailand.

I don't know what I'd use if I didn't have this handy stylus. Actually on my Spain review last year I put a few gifs up, but I can't recall right now what I used. I didn't have this phone then. When I think of it I'll let you know.

Thanks man.

We stayed at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit. Sounds like you went the other way towards Nana plaza.

Pics make me think we should do one night there since we're going through. We get to BKK at 10am. I'm about to pack too much stuff into my itinerary.

Really great review.
We are going to se Asia in The fall but still haven’t decided on the final destination. This was really helpful.

From what you experienced, where would you recommend sending someone for their first Asian vacation if they only had a week? (Sucks, but we will only have 9 days total and two of those will be spent flying)

Thailand is probably by far the easiest in the region to deal with if you aren't accustomed to truly foreign travel. It offers a lot of that strange land feeling while not being overwhelming.

I'm sure places like Bali, Singapore/Malaysia, Hong Kong, are similar.

On the other hand, I went to India pretty early in my travels, and after that everything is much easier. It's why I disagree when people on this board say Bangkok is too much. I've seen far worse

Just noticed the 9 days. I'm still going to say Thailand due to 1) I'm familiar with it and 2) it's developed infrastructure will allow you to fly places without wasting too much time.

You'll still be able to have a great experience with that time so don't worry.

That highly depends on what kind of stuff you're into, but without knowing any of that I would agree with Teddy on Thailand.

If I was going alone that's probably where I'd go simply because of the language barrier. Apparently they speak more English in Thailand than most other places in SE Asia.

And although Bangkok is huge and has a certain reputation, it's a very developed and metropolitan city.

I definitely had more fun in Vietnam, but that's mainly because my gf speaks the language, and it was our main destination so we planned more cool shite to do.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have traveled quite a few times, but only to Western Europe, Canada, and Mexico. I’m pretty adventurous and would definitely want to mix in a jungle or national park or something similar. Vietnam looks incredible, I have just been concerned about getting from one city to another and breaking the language barrier in a short amount of time.

Getting to Phong Nha (the jungle we went to) isn't very hard, but if time is an issue it may not be worth it. We took a train to Dong Hoi, then it's abt a 45 min to an hour drive by taxi.

Potentially you could fly from Hanoi or Saigon to Dong Hoi, they have an airport, then taxi. To do any worthwhile jungle or cave exploring you'd have to commit at least 3 nights in Phong Nha.

If you only have 7 true days it may be pushing it. Again, that all depends on what you want to see, but I'll say if I only had 7 days and did it again, I would have no qualms skipping the big cities (Hanoi & Saigon) and doing the smaller ones we went to (Ninh Binh & Phong Nha).
