I don't know much about any of this, but my youngest son has a Xbox One that he plays Fortnite and Minecraft online with his baws on. It has the older controllers that don't have the 3.5mm headphone jack on them. He bought a headset that came with an adaptor that plugs into the bottom of the controller but he's had nothing but trouble with it. He could never get the mic to work right. This One on Amazon

Fast forward to now...his birthday is next weekend. I bought him a new wireless controller today at Walmart that has the 3.5mmm jack on it. I assume any new controller will sync with an older Xbox one? It's an Xbox branded controller.

I want to get him a decent headset. Any recommendation for one I can order on Amazon for around $40 or less? Something that's in stock as his bday party is next Friday. Thanks!

I have the Turtle Beach Recon 200 set. They are around $50 (not checking stock for you). I've thought about upgrading them over the years, but so many people I game with have bought higher end headsets and a lot of them have all kinds of problems with them. Sound not working right, their mic sucks to be in a party with, etc. So, can't rec the Recon 200s enough as a set that just works well and are relatively cheap.

What do you think about the Recon 70? It looks similar to the 200 but not amplified. Does the amplified make your controller battery last much longer?

I don't have any experience with the Recon 70s so I can't say anything one way or the other. As for the battery and the Recon 200s the headphones will last literally all day and then some on a single charge. The biggest drawback is remembering to turn them off when you are done. Otherwise, you walk up on a dead headset when you're ready to play and have to charge them while you wear them to play for ~30min. Not a big deal if you have a wall outlet and long usb cord next to where you sit to play. I have the Elite Series 2 controller and I probably only charge it once a week. My standard Xbox controllers I would plug them in after every use to charge whatever cheap amazon battery pack I have in them. I would imagine the standard controllers would suffer more if the headphones were powered by their battery. But, at the end of the day you are using around the same amount of power anyway, so it's really a wash. You're either charging you're headset and controller or just the controller. Again, if you have an outlet and long usb you can charge either one while you play. This is ideal because there will always be a time when you want to play and one or the other will be dead. So, whatever way you go a god addition to the setup, if you don't already have it, would be a cheap 10' usb micro cord, or whatever your stuff uses, from Amazon and a wall adapter if you don't have a spare laying around.

The controller will connect just fine. Just hit button on the side of the console and the top of controller to sync. I’ve recommended Astro A10s to a bunch of friends and they love them. I have the expensive wireless version. I believe the A10s are right around 50 bucks.

Thanks for all the advice! I think I'm going to pick up a pair of the Recon 200's. The Astro A10 gets really good reviews also, but my son will be turning 11 and the Recon 200's seem a little smaller and would be a little better fit for his kid sized head. Also, the mic doesn't stick out as far on the Recon's, which seems better for his smaller head. Judging by the reviews I've read I can't really go wrong with either one and they're both the same price, $60. I like the fact I can pick up the Recon 200 at my local Walmart. His bday party is this Friday and with the way Amazon is shipping things lately I am afraid I won't get them in time, even though it says delivery by Friday.

Fat Batman.....

I bought the recon 200's today. I also bought a lighting-to-3.5mm adapter for his iPhone. With the 200's being self amplified, will he be able to plug them into his iPhone to also use them for games and music on his phone? I want to sound like I know what I'm talking about when I give them to him on his bday and not sound like a dumb old fart. Lol

I don't have an iPhone, but Ive used mine on my laptop and Android to listen to audio. Never tried the mic though. It's my understanding that as long as the jack you plug them into supports sound and mic (which a phone should since a lot of phones ship with headphones with mics) it will work. I don't know how the lightening port works though so can't say for sure if the mic will work. I know some computers have separate audio out and mic in inputs so you would need a splitter for that connection to work with the mic. As far as the amplified aspect, the headphones run off their own battery and from what I can tell don't run on power from what you plug them into.
