Can anyone explain to me like I'm a child the catch with the ATT next plan?
Which is better the old way ($199 up front) or this New Next plan?
What's the difference in the two?

Not sure about that.
I am.

Even under the older plans, when you go to "upgrade" they automatically change (increase by $25) your charges for the network access if you don't use the next option.
Incorrect. My wife and I have had the same plan for nearly 8 years. 700 shared minutes, unlimited data, 200 texts each. $140/month. Every two years we upgrade phones for $199 + one-time $40 upgrade fee (mine was $249 this time since I got the Nexus 6). No additional charges to our account. If I bought a phone outright instead, our plan would still be $140/month. Nothing changes. Our 24-month costs, including flagship phones and upgrade fees, are around $600 less than the so-called "cheaper" $130/month 10GB plan with ATT Next.
This is probably the fifth time I've had to explain this to someone here.

It completely depends on the type of plan you are on, how often you want to upgrade, and/or what type of phones you intend to buy. If you are on one of the more recent ATT plans that actually penalize you for not using ATT Next, and you like to get flagship phones every two years, then you should just use ATT Next. Otherwise, ATT tacks on another $25 per line per month if you do the "$199" upgrade. Again, this ENTIRELY depends on what plan you have. It is inaccurate to state that your bill will definitely go up if you don't use ATT next.

If you dont do next. you lose the $25 per line discount btw. They basically force you to do the next deal.

Just call in after you receive your statement with the charge on it and ask them to remove it. Most of the time they will.
i've had good luck doing this.
