Good rant.
I agree with all the recommendations for Roku and Fire devices. They're great streamers for the money. The Nvidia Shield cost more but provides a bit more functionality over a streamer.
Have you considered connecting a PC to your main TV? I like pairing a streamer with a mini PC that has a full browser which I believe provides the best of both worlds.
