If you were talking to a tech illiterate person about the basic needs for your home and smartphone, what would you say?
Can I give an example? I hear these things a lot and will give it a try:
1. You need a wireless vpn to…..
2. You need malware fr your laptop because……here are your options
3. For your smartphone, you need a vpn and security. Options…..
4. For your home, you need this internet provider.
5. You need this tv provider.
6. You need to shut off access to your printer because it can be hacked.
7. Make your RING hack proof by……
Etc etc
If someone hired you, where would you start and how many bullet points would you go to?

This is all dumb
You don't need a VPN, most of the big names farm your information too.
Windows Defender is plenty good enough for users who don't click on every link they get from a Nigerian prince
And keeping all of your devices local to your network, so they cant call out will make it less likely to get hacked.

Hmm I wouldn't hit many of those items, personally.
I'd go with:
1) What phone do you/your family have? Do you want to go Amazon Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home as your primary "smarthome" source?
I've tried all 3 and currently swapped back to Google Home. I can go into more reasons for this but the main is because the "Google Home" app on my phone can live stream my Google Nest Doorbell and Nest Cam in my sons room.
2) What smart devices do you want? Do you want a smart doorbell? Smart cams indoor/outdoor, smart lock, etc? I personally like the Aqara U100 Smart Lock and the Google Nest Doorbell (Gen 2) and the latest Google Nest Indoor/Outdoor Cameras.
3) In terms of home internet, if you have AT&T Fiber, that's probably your best best.
4) If you want to "cut the cord", I'd suggest YouTube TV or Hulu with Live TV. There's many threads on this topic.

Right. I'm not a fan of VPNs anymore. They fear monger now and say you need one but they farm your info too.
It's not any better than AT&T or Comcast farming your data and in fact, vpn's just slow your internet speed down while providing the "mask" of security (for the most part).
99% of people using the internet, don't need a vpn.

Thank you. However the Cut the cord OP states that thread is obsolete.
That’s what prompted me to ask.

I’ll agree. That’s why I asked as a clueless person.
