Meal Team Six approved... LINK
(in case it wasn't obvious, there are certainly better bags than this out there, though the price on this one is' pretty good if you have the need to pack a laptop or an SMG depending on the day.)

In all seriousness though, any particular style you're looking for here or a price point to stay under? The world is pretty much your oyster here, so would need that to provide much in the way of recommendations.
The one above actually does have good padding and tough to beat the price on it with the markdown + coupon... but not sure if that's the look you're going for.
If you don't like that particular bag but do like the "tactical" style, 5.11 Rush Lima messenger bag is another one that doesn't look too bad. LINK
Filson makes some great looking briefcase style bags, but I can't personally justify $300-450 for it when I've got so many free bags from work. If you want that look but cheaper, something like this one could work. LINK
Another option is to look at laptop sleeves for fairly cheap, and then just find a bag that you like in general and you don't have to worry about how much padding they have themselves (as that can sometimes be the limiting factor if you don't want a classic black nylon laptop bag).

That’s what my wife went with. She made her own sleeve with some padding and fabric and sewed it all herself. And it fits her MacBook like a glove. She has a big button on one side and a loop that goes around the button to secure it. She puts that inside her work bag. I’m thinking of getting her to make me one in plain fabric for when I go back to the office.

Anything other than a backpack looks like a purse.

There are some briefcase options that are alright. The Filson one comes to mind, but +1 that I prefer backpack personally. If for no other reason than it's more comfortable to wear when I have to go to conventions for work and hike all the way up and down some shitty grouping of hotels and/or convention centers (shite... what are those like... it's been so long. lol).

I've had a Booq for 10 years and it still looks great and is very durable.

I just got a Bopai Slim and really like it. I have been carrying a SwissGear for many years and wanted something slimmer.
It's got soft microfiber materials for the laptop pouch. Good amount of padding and some hidden compartments. And it's only $50
Bopai Slim
ETA - Just noticed you said "non-backpack" - oh well, I got nothing....
