What I learned about Plex DVR & HD Homerun after LSU game

1. You cannot 'break in on' a DVR recording while its still going to watch from beginning/pause/etc. I wonder if this has something to do with the commercial-skip feature. A little frustrating but the good news is I had the OTA tuned to ABC when the game started so luckily I didn't have to wait until the recording finished to begin watching it.
2. Thank goodness for HD Homerun hardware being independent from Plex client! Plex Fire TV client crashed twice during the game and I was able to reboot the FireTV and go back to the game and was offered teh 'start from beginning of show' or 'current time'. Given that I was unable to access my DVR recording while it was in-progress this was a godsend not to miss any of the game. Glad HD Homerun tuner is a separate system from Plex.
3. If you add 'sports guard' (i added 2 hours to the end of the game) remember that you won't be able to get to that DVR recording until like midnight when it finally finishes up.
4. The commercial skip feature worked very well during the LSU/Miami game when I finally was able to watch the DVR recording the next day.
Anyone have a solution (other than occupying another OTA tuner?) to the fact you can't watch a DVR'd show while its still in progress via Plex?
Eta everything above was done through Plex client ux if I didn't make that clear.i didn't run any third party apps.

It is a limitation due to design choices made by the Plex developers. The way it stores the recording in temp files or something along those lines.
Emby does not have this limitation btw.

Is emby another media server?
Hey are you wanting to rewind and pause during the live game? I know some people may want to do that but frick i want live shite.
How many tuners does the HD Homerun have? I used the hauppauge quad tuner. I didnt watch this game from it but i have before and didnt have the issues you had, but idk which which tuner i was watching, and i didnt try to rewind or anything.

I've been using DVRs since Replay and TiVo in the 1990s and never had this issue.
Since I had a bunch of people over for the game this could have been a disaster...we wouldn't have been able to watch the game or been forced to miss half of it and have no way to pause it back up. Glad I learned this now.
Other ota users beware! This is big deal.

Also you didn't want to rewind anything like that sweet kickoff that took out the pylon in the back of the end zone? I rewound that like 4 times.

so what did you use to pause and rewind?
I dont remember the watch espn app or other streaming apps allowing you to rewind. or do they?
Also have you looked into adding someone to your home to be able to share the OTA antenna?

Yes. Hd homerun allowed me to do all those things on the SECOND tuner which luckily I had on ABC since before the game started... But nothing was being saved outside of the tuner cache which luckily was several hours.
I would have been screwed if that second tuner was tuned to a different channel at any point.
The other tuner was constipated by the Plex DVR until like 12:15am and for all intents and purposes, dead during that time frame.

But you did this through the HD app correct?
IDK how you switch tuners with plex or tell which tuner you are on. I have 4 tuners. let me try watching multiple channels right now.
so yea i can watch multiple streams but i cant tell which tuner it is useing. and yes i have pause and rewind in the cache on plex. So the only hiccup is if you change the channel you will lose your cache im guessing. where with a normal DVR is just goes back to the record stream. I think that would be a simple programming issue.

Slightly off topic, but I plugged an antenna into my TCL and it has a built in 90 second pause function..Pretty cool for a tv

quote:i was always on board with the idea of TVs having the DRV on the unit rather than the cable box. therefore you could record anything the tv shows. BUT the whole integration with the guide would need to be thought out.

I just hated getting a new box and losing all the stuff ou had recorded.

No. Through Plex. I only have 2 tuners so it's safe for me to assume since one was locked up with the DVR, the second one was the one I used.
quote:completely invisible to you until you run out of tuners. Try setting 4 to record something at the same time and then try to tune in a different channel.

I have no idea how many "tuned channels" are being buffered at the same time by hd homerun. I would think the hd transfer would start to suffer the more you have going concurrently.

I remember having a DTV box several years back and having to pay for the usb to be enabled so I could use an external...I had to replace a box one time and had to pay to have that one enabled to use my external again..Probably when I started going offline

I'm confused by this as well. Plex must be doing something to it's DVR recording that doesn't happen when you tune a channel that is already "buffering". Make sense?
Plex DVR channel - locked until DVR turns off
Ota channel/no dvr live TV buffering - real time pause, rewind, start over, etc... EVEN IF PLEX CLIENT COMPLETELY CRASHES AND YOU HAVE TO REBOOT.

That's what you get for not trying it before the game. Yes, it kinda sucks compared to cable or streaming with dvr but it was better than watchespn and I didn't have to pay for cable or a streaming service.

i thought i had. but apparently i had only recorded little 30 minute shows before and never tried to watch them while the recording was still-in-progress.
you get comfortable with certain behaviors all DVRs have had for 20 years and forget to test all scenarios.
lesson learned.

Still better than when I was using WMC for my OTA recordings. I had a seperate plex library just to play recordings while the program is still on. I could only watch up to the time when I started playback so I was constantly watching a partial recording as far as I could and then having to restart it and fast forward to where I was. Not too bad for sitcoms but was a major pain in the arse for games.

And that is what you pay a slight premium for when you buy a solid product like Tivo. You watch the game and enjoy your friends instead of being on-site tech support.

Lol I wasn't. Plex is a solid product, they are just new to the DVR and live tv game.
