I replaced my MackBook Air and Mac mini with one. Sold my old ones on Ebay and got a nice chunk of my money back so both upgrades netted out at a few hundreds bucks total. I have a jillion photos and the Photos App loads in one hop like nothing I've ever seen before. So far works like butter, non ported apps work fine with the Rosetta program. Laptops will run up to 20 straight hours of video on a single charge.
BUT my Mini occasionally pops the screen saver up at random while actively using it and the screen locks up. Have to do a hard reboot --but that only takes a few moments as the system is so fast. . Sure that will be fixed in an update soon.

Love my M1 Air, crazy fast. I have the occasional screen saver pop up, I'm sure they will fix it. Also, sometimes it's tough to connect to an external monitor but it seems to be an issue they are working on.

Has anyone with an M1 tried to get multple displays via a usb-c/thunderbolt docking station or something like that?

The Mini can handle 2 external displays but the Air and 13” MBP will only support 1 external display.
I use multiple monitors at work but only a single wide monitor at home so its not really a deal-breaker for me but it is still surprising for Apple to have that limitation. Maybe the USB dongles work well hanging off a docking station, I dunno.

Just to confirm, you replaced just the chips in your old macs?

Heh. No I sold my Mac mini and Mac book air on Ebay. Then I bought brand new versions with the M1 chip
